Pee Wees win tWoi'aflie series 7 The visiting Clinton, New York PeeWee Jets won 7-3 on total goals in a two -game series with the Clinton, Ontario Kinsmen PeeWee Ponies last Friday and Saturday. In their first encounter on Friday evening, both Clinton teams played a good skating gam& and everyone in the arena was caught up by the action. Steve Cook gave the Ponies an early lead on a backhand shot at 2:15 of the first period. Team Capt. Raymond Burns set Cookie up on the play. New York scored the lone marker in the second period on a wicked shot from Rob Olsen. Richard Welch was brilliant in. the Ponies' net, but was beaten on two lovely goals --the first at 4:15 of the third by Perry Babcock and the other a breakaway by Don Clifford. ' 3 Welch had a piece of the puck on his stick glove, but the puck hit on the inside of the goal post. A little shoving match between Ben Heintz and'Richard Welch eamed the two boys a five-minute .major for fighting. Clifford's goal came only 20 seconds after both teams had returned to full strength. The lead did not 'survive for long: On the next series of play, Steve Cook showed the hometown crowd his Rocket Richard style of scoring by breaking in alone on his wrong wing and flipping in a backhand. Saturday afternoon's game was another good effort by both clubs. Neither team was able to beat the two , good goalies until Don Clifford scored on a penalty shot at 8:50 of the first period. Local Bantams shut out Dearborn, Mich. team 7-L Robert "Swanky" Andrews and sub -goalie Tom Mirch kept the St. Sebastian Bantams from scoring in the annual Dearborn, Michigan vs. Clinton, Ontario Bantam classic played last Friday night. The 7-0 shutout meant that Clinton's Fish and Game Bantams retained the St. Sebastian trophy which they have won every year since its donation. Clinton's Bantams controlled the game from the early minutes, but couldn't beat Jim Hamel in Dearbom's net until 11:33 of the first period on a goal by Brian Langille. Bill Cantelon set up Paul Kay for Clinton's second scoring ,effort at 1:25 in the seco period. Clinton's third was typical goal for Mike Anste Mike parked himself in front the net and tipped in Bai Edgar's long slapshot from t blue line. The winner of the first s1' award, Dave Fawcett, scor two goals. His first one could called a fluke — as he u speeding into the corner passed the puck out, but it the goalie's side and dropped to score. The next goal was up by Langille on a faceoff p back to the point, 25 secon into the third period. Clinton's final two goals w by Mike Anstett, his second, a a lone one by Bill Crawford. Bruce Collins, minor hockey committee chairman, presents the Ted McCullough trophy to Dick Maxam, captain of the winning New York team. and down the ice, but again the goaltending by Matt Weimer for New York and Richard Welch for the Ponies was outstanding and no goals were scored. At the beginning of the last period, the game's star, Perry Midget mismatch "Oldtimers" sub for Wingham, put in last minute goal to win Poor driving conditions kept Wingham's Midgets team home last Saturday evening, so the Clinton `Minor Hockey Day Committee put together a team of "oldtimers", town leaguers, Colt Intermediate players and Midgets visiting from Dearborn, Mich. Despite some comic moments the game was a well -played affair and most of the fans stayed to the finish to see the Oldtimers pull the game out on a goal by Dave McConnell with only 45 seconds left. Dave, an employee of the Bank of Montreal, fired a hard shot past David Slade. Glen Irwin and Gary Cuninings scored 40 seconds apart to give the Midgets an early 2.0 lead. Danny Colquhoun flopped on top of Irwin, but Glen hooked the puck into the het. Danny was playing with et least an extra 30 pounds Ott his frame and his pants have picked up a few moth holes and tape patches. During the first period, Brian Edgar and his father, Mait, locked their' skates together and both had quite a time untangling, At the 10 -minute mark of the second period, Clinton Recreation Director "Chiefy" Andrews entered the game and was greeted by a thunderous roar from the young crowds. And what happened his first time on the ice? --he broke his stick over Brian Edgar's shins and sharp-eyed Gus Boussey sent Andrews to the "sin bin" for a three:minute rest. With John Anstett sitting out a three-minute penalty, Mike Frakas scored the .0ldtimers' first goal. Again the Midgets went ahead on a beautiful hard slap shot at 16:00 of the third period. Two quick goals, by Chuck Andrews and Newt Collins, tied up the game before McConnell scored the winner. The Midget trophies, the Don Yeo Memorial and Slade IGA will be awarded at an exhibition game with Wingham. No date for 'the match has been set. The Bantam game between St. Sebastian of Dearborn, Mich. and the squad from Clinton, N.Y. was an exciting match last Saturday morning. Both clubs played according to their style of head manning the puck with excellent fore checking. New York's goalie, Dave Nicholson; robbed Dearborn of many good scoring chances.
