Minister's wall
gets lake
splake
A sixteen -and -a -half pound
splake, caught by Purvis
Fisheries off the south shore of
Manitoulin Island recently, will
soon .hang On the office wall of
Lands and Forests Minister Hon,
Rene Brunelle.
The seven -to -eight-year-old
male, in spawning condition at
the time of capture, was one of
the oldest surviving splake which
the department originally
planted by air as yearlings in
May, 1961.
The big splake was dropped
in one of a series of test
air -plants made by the
department of lands and forests
research branch. These plantings
were in connection with the
selective breeding programme
which has developed. highly
selected splake (lake trout -brook
trout hybrid), the progeny of
which will be stocked in large
numbers in Lake Huron and
Georgian Bay.
More than 10 percent of a
planting of first generation
(yearling) splake made off the
south shore of Manitoulin Island
in 1966 had been recaptured by,
commercial fishermen in Lake
Huron.
The' department has traced
the movement of these fish as
far northwest of the original
planting site as the St. Mary's
River and as far south as the •
Sarnia -Grand Bend area, a
distance of some 150 to 200
miles.

Colts triumph twice in wee
down Listowel and Wingham
BY BERT CLIFFORD '
Listowel was :outmuscled by
the Clinton Colts in W,O.A.A.
Intermediate "0" play last
Thursday, The home game
ended with the scoreboard
showing Clinton the winner, 7.5,
Several solid body checks by
Laurie Colquhoun and Doug
McCauley, Clinton's
defencemen, slowed down the
fast -skating Listowel club.
For the last several games,
our forward and defencemen
have been sparing the body work
— and the team went without a
win.
After Listowel scored early in
the first period, Don Freeman, a
past junior hockey player for
Clinton, teamed up with Ron
Sheppard and Fred Parsons to
even the score.
"Little Joe" Livermore
scored his first goal of the night
from a pass launched by Don
McDougall.
In the second period, Don
McDougall finally broke the jinx
and scored his first goal of the
Season by banging home a
rebound.
McDougall has had several
good scoring chances, but the
goal post always manages to be
in the way.
Two quick goals at 9:24 and
9:29 by Bud Boyes and
Livermore gave Clinton a 5-1
lead. The tempo of the game
changed for about 10 minutes,
with Listowel out hustling the
Colts and scoring two goals to
narrow the gap to 5-3.
At 15:56 of the ' second
period, the workhorse on
Clinton's team, Paul Draper, dug
the puck out from behind the
net and made a perfect pass to
Keith Allen who only had to
push the disc into the net.
Listowel made the contest a
real thriller for the large crowd,
by scoring two quick goals early
in the third period on Robbie
Farquhar.
After Livermore's hat trick
goal at 9:40, Gary Black
replaced Farquhar in the nets
and held Listowel off the
scoreboard.
The game featured the first
fight of the season when Keith
Allen .tangled with a Listowel,
defenceman in front of
Listowel's goalie.
Referees Lou Heinback and
0. Sawyer from Mitchell
assessed only eight penalties,
four to each team.
Clinton travels to Listowel
Tuesday for a rematch.

period to win $-5.
As in the Colt games, the
contest had only six penaltieiw&,
with Clinton tabbed for four of
the two minute minors.

Action in minor hockey
Clinton's Peewee and I3antam
teams competed in the Silver
Stick I"Iockey Tournament at
Watford last Saturday, with the
Bantams winning over St. Marys
3-1 on goals by Paul Kelly, Paul
Kay and Danny Colquhoun.
The team was behind 1-0
after two periods, then Paul Kay
scored on a quick wrist shot at
5:10 of the third period.
A breakaway save by. Tom
Murch came soon after the goal
and seemed to give the players
the lift needed to push harder to
score.
The next Bantam game will
be at 5:50 p.m. Saturday when
they go on to the next round of
the tourney in a contest with
Byron which defeated Listowel
2-1 in a thrilling game last week.
CTV was far ahead of the
CBC in their coverage of Apollo
8 and the astronauts. CTV took
two hours from NBC ,at the
launch, while CBC took one
hour from CBS. CTV also used
additional material and put their
commentators to work far more
than did the CBC.
