IN MEMORIAM The Ontario Bean GrOWerS' Co-OpOratiVe of London set a record for •44 190 fi$oal year — it had a net loss 01;248,243 for the period ending last August 31. The London plant, built in 1953, has had a long history of losing money on operations. The highest loss preVious to the latest financial Statement WAS last year When it went into the red by $84,344. The bulk of last year's loss and most of this year's deficit was blamed on spoiled beans in company-owned silos that continued to leak until recent weeks, Duncan Ferguson of St, Thomas, chairman of the co-operative, told the annual meeting in • Strathroy that a $70,000 renovation programme has been completed at the plant, waterproofing the silos and revamping the processing operation to speed up output. Mr. Ferguson reviewed the last 11 months beginning last January when directors became aware beans were continuing to deteriorate in the silos. " He said a physical inventory was taken in April. "It became evident that things had not been managed as well as we thought," said Mr. Ferguson. "There were bad beans at the top and bottom of the silos but we didn't know- what was in the middle, We also wondered how many of these beans had been carried over as inventory from previous years that really had little value." He said directors decided to empty the elevator and clean out all stocks. A large quantity had to be exported .as feed at a very low price. Mr. Ferguson Said/ four silos installed only three / years ago when the plant was bfing held in trusteeship by the provincial government were off about the poorest construetion people of knowledge had ever seen in that line. All Were Very'iiorotis. The chairman said the co-operative has applied to the Industrial Development Bank for a $135,000 loan] but it has not yet been approVed. The money would be used, to offset bank loans and provide new working capit4, _• - Referring' tO the 1968 crop, he said about; 90 percent of the beans taken ,in were in a wet condition. t "They hate all been 'dried and .hopefully they are still in-good qiotimpi . . 1.1f411114, He said the new plant Manager Alec McIntosh — hired ir,fter the former manager Archie iMeMilrehy resigned in April — is !Making regular checks on the ,Silos for any leakage. - ' When: the financial statement was read showing the huge loss, one grciwer suggested: "Sell the damn thing. We are just getting in deeper every year. Private dealers are making money." Another wondered whether the • , co-operative could get insurance covering bean deteXioration. Mr. Gregory said a lot of wouldn't flow Mit; of the silo and a bole had to be knocked in the side to clean them apt, lie said some of the bad beans had been in the Alas for more than two years and men at the plant just left them there. Elected directors for two-year So uthwestern Ontario farmers once engaged in growing sugar beets will get final payments for their ..ist crop early in the new year. The agricultural stablization board announced that the total deficiency payment on the 1967 crop will be $6,41 per ton. An interim payment of $3 per standard ton was made in December, 1967. The department estimates 800 growers in Southwestern Ontario will be affected. Their production that year was 265,000 tons. It is expected that Canada and Dominion Sugar Company, whose refinery in Chatham has since been closed, will make its final payment to growers when the government deficiency cheques are issued in about 10 days. Growers have already received $12• a ton for their crop. The support price is $15.50. While , growers may have expected to get more because final prices in Southwestern Ontario were below the national Arthur and Listowel defeated the Clinton Colts in back-to-back games last month. Arthur, although a very young and inexperienced team, checked the Colts with some great fore checking. Arthur struck earl, in the game for three quick goals. Ray Brown and Bud Boyes closed the score to 3-2 by-scoring in the, last minute of the first period. The teams scored two goals each- in the second with Boyes ,and QlewJpickirig markers. Bud Boyes,' recuperating from a bout of pleurisy, gained his skating legs in the third period. He scored two beautiful goals and put in a third, but referee Lou Heinbach ruled the puck had not entered the net. The game again, as in most of the Colts' games this year, was cleanly played with only seven penalties assessed — four to Clinton and three to the visitors. * * * At Listowel the following evening only 10 • players, including the goalie, showed up to start. Fred Parsons gave Clinton an early lead with two goals in the first period. Listowel beat Gary Black with six consecutive goals before Randy Glew and Mait Edgar scored for the Colts. Newcomer -to the team, Charlie Rau, teamed up with Dale and Boyes to score his first 11111 Best Wishes for the New Year The New Year is the time for terms were Kenneth Ferguson, Aivinston; Cordon Anderson, Northwood; John McilhargeY of Luean arid. Mr. R4U, Mr, Ferguson, Clifford Wildeblecid of ,Northweod and Edward Dearing of Staffs still have one year to serVe.• average, there will be ,an offsetting reduction becapse their beets fell below the Standard sugar content of 16 percent, or production of 250 pounds of sugar per ton. Payments already made to the growers for the 1967 crop include an initial company payment of $7 per ton at delivery, a government guaranteed advance of $2 and the interim subsidy of $3. Yet to be paid is the transitional assistance benefit of $60 per acre promised by the federal government when the sugar beet industry ceased to exist in Ontario. Lloyd Lovell of Kippen said last week that he didn't expect the assistance payment would come until late January or early February because the Treasury Department received the necessary figures later than, expected. TEENAGE MOOSE Moose live about twice as long as deer, occasionally attaining an age of 12 or 15 years., goal with the Intermediates. Coach Malt Edgar has high hopeS for this new man and feels he will be a good asset to the team, , Between the Blue Lines Injuries and holidays for' some members 'of the team seriously affected the team's play in these two games. At a recent meeting of the team and the WOAA executive, two of our oui-of-toWn players, defensive, star Ken Daer' and newcomer Bill Weber, have been ruled ineligible due to the new residence rule. In Thursday's game with Arthur,. big "Butch" Murney sat the game out with a twisted knee. Also missing from the lineup were Don Martin, Bob Livermore, Harvey Dale and Keith Allen. Allen is hoping to play early in the new year. He suffered a cracked collar bone in Kincardine early in the season. Captain Paul Draper lost three teeth and picked up a bad cut when hit with a stick on the mouth early in the third period Thursday, December 19. Draper was unable to play December 20 and his absence from the lineup was evident. Another of the fast Clinton skaters is young Doug McDougall who missed the Friday night game. McDougall is hoping he can soon shake his scoring slump. He has missed some excellent scoring chances in recent play. B.C. CLASSIFIED ADV.
