• Pruning, is ann-oPeration that
.must be carefully studied before
the actual work is started. You
need to have a reason for
removing every hranch or twig.
Dead branches.or those showing

removed -without hesitation.
Shade trees are Pruned to

columnar 'tree has been planted
this shape must be retained.
Eliminate weak crotches.
These occur when two leading
shoott arise from the main trunk
or , when a strong side shoot
develops and grows upwards
parallel to the main shoot. If
two leaders are allowed to
develop or grow, there will be a
time when they will split apart
et the point where the two
branches arise.
To avoid this allow only one
main leading shoot to develop. If
the tree has already grown to a
large size the only thing left to
dO is to brace it by bolting or
cabling the two main trunks
together.
This is done with a long rod,

SHOPPING TIP
When buying meat, fish or
poultry, consider the 'amounts of
bone and fat. Estimate the
number of servings per poUnd.
Then eompare prices.
Have you, developed habits to
keep your home as safe as
possible? There is ever-present
potential danger from accidental
poisoning from household
preparations in your home
unless you practise such
common-sense precautions as
the following, listed in the
federal health department
publication, Keep Your Home
Free from Poisonings:
- When answering the
phone, carry with you or put
out of harm's way any
preparation that could hurt your
child. It is better to risk losing a
call than to risk losing your
child,
- When "dry cleaning" keep
doors or windows open.
Remember, fumes from cleaning
fluids can poison as well as
ignite.
- When housecleaning, if
you cannot watch your child
every moment. at least keep an
eye on the cleaners and polishes
you are using. ?lace them all in
one basket and take them with
you as you move about the
house.
- When your children are
around, warn them of the
dangers of the preparation you
are using. Familiarize them with
the container. Never .transfer
harmful substances to cups, milk
bottles, or other food
containers.
- When discarding
medicines, curling solutions or
other potent preparations, make
sure children will not be able to
recover them from garbage cans
or elsewhere.
- As soon as your task is
done, put away the "tools". The
sooner nosions are restored to a
safe place, the less the risk of
accidents.
CHECK PRICES
Consider your time, and the
quality df the finished product,
when deciding on the use of
convenience foods.
Food specialists at Macdonald
Institute, University of Guelph,
suggest checking the pliceS to
see whether it would pay to
prepare the product yourself
from the basic ingredients.
Sometimes it won't. Two factors
which will influence your
decision are how much you
enjoy cooking, and the time ' ou
can spend in the preparation, of
food,
