Alan Eagleson, executive director of the NHL Players' Association. In the December MacLean's Magazine Eagleson writes a scathing indictment of the NHL's "master-and-serf" mentality in its treatment of the hockey stars who are the nation's idols. "NHL clubs have an absolute minimum of - interest in encouraging their players to educate themselves and prepare for the long years of work in the conventional world after their Thursday nights will be Clinton Colts "hockey night" in the local community centre. Check writer, noisy driver both in court Bernard Pettipas, 58, of Don Mills pleaded guilty in Goderich magistrate's court Monday to 13 charges of false pretences. The case was adjourned to January 29. The charges were laid after cheques were accepted by Clinton merchants during October and November, 1967., Pettipas was arrested in Kitchener last February 7. Barry Irwin, 21, of Clinton, was fined $50 and costs for making unnecessary noise with a motor vehicle in Clinton September 25. He also was fined $40 and costs and had his driver's licence suspended for a year for speeding in Clinton September 27. LONDESBORO. Berean .UCW The Berean Unit of the U.C.W. met this month at the home of Mrs. Gordon Robinson with 20 present. The president opened with a Remembrance Day poem. Mrs. Scott read a portion of Scripture. Mrs. Gourley reported on the regional meeting held recently in Varna, Mrs. Allen introduced the new study book on China. The programme was taken by Mrs. Heckendorn and Mrs. Scott. Two on ballot for Goderich Twp. reeve Goderich voters have only. one choice to make next month to complete the lineup on the Council. Both G. H. Stirling and E. U. Mcllwain are running for reeve, but W. R. Jenkins won the deputy reeve post by acclamation and there was a similar lack of competition for the three councillor's seats won by M. J. Forbes, C. G. Ginn and J. A. Tebutt. hockey days are' finished," he writes. "To them, a university education is excess baggage, even 11:•o h school can be a kind of a Problem, and a B.A. is just something that keeps a player from devoting all of his thinking time to the next game. "Many (hockey team owners)' actively resist the players' efforts to finish their schooling. In American pro football, 75 percent of the players are university graduates; in pro basketball, 60 percent hold university degrees but in the NHL the number of players with university educations amounts • Eleven of the Colts' 13 home games are scheduled for Thursdays at 8:30 o'clock in the Western Ontario Athletic Association's intermediate "C" hockey league. The first game in the 10-tdam league was slated for tonight but ice is not available here yet. Clinton goes to Shelburne tomorrow night for its first game, and Shelburne's return visit will be scheduled here at a later date. The Colts, under the management of R. S. "Bud" Schoenhals and coach Mait Edgar, both former standouts on former Clinton Colts hockey teams, play a double schedule with the other four southern teams, and a single schedule against the five northern teams. "Worse, only 17 percent of all the young men now performing in the NHL, the most prestigious hockey league in the world, have even graduated from high school." Eagleson quotes Henri "The Rocket" Richard as saying: "Most of us players don't have too much education because we had to quit school to play hockey. When we went into the office to sign our contracts, the club had lawyers and accountants everywhere and we had only ourselves. We were never prepared for these business deals."
