dates back. to 1861
. The history of the present
home of Mr. and Mrs, W. E.
Parker was one of the toPiCs,
given at the monthly meeting of
the Bayfield branch of the
historical society, Mrs, Parker
stated that a deed for the land
was registered in 1861, the first
owner being the Baronet's
Tuyll and, one Year later, it was
sold for taxes to Robert A.
Montgomery.
The land was sold for taxes,
four years later to Daniel Wilson
who erected the dwelling and
planted an orchard, John Day
owned the property from 1876
to 1933 at which time he sold it
to Harold Stintson for $165. The
Porkers -rented from Mr. Stimson
until 1949 when they became
the owners. There have been
numerous alterations and
improvements to the house, but
two beautiful pine floora and
some of the original plaster'
remains.
Two letters written in 1844
by famous Elliott were read to
the group by the chairman, Mrs.
A.S. Morton.',These letters were
acquired from "Private
manuscripts, Ontario Archives,
Toronto", by Mr. Elliott's great
granddaughters, the Misses
Kathleen and Marie Elliott of
Clinton. The Elliotts had
imigrated from Ireland and had
settled in the Peterborough
district. Mr. Elliott evidently
learned of the very fine land in
the Stanley Huron tract and
located on the Goshen Line, The
first letter to his wife, Mary,
written in February reaffirmed
44 great satilactiort in living
"So desirably sitnated,"and
instructed her to leave et once ,as
the sleighing was uncertain.
"When you are in Toronto
enquire the shortest way to
Hondas, then to Stratford, and,
when you have come 30 •Miles
past Stratford you must enquire
foe the Township of Stanley,
live •on the 10th concession".
Mrs. Mott and children
completed the journey in ten
days.
The second letter was 'to
Edward booby in which Mr,
Elliott encouraged all former
friends and neighbours to come
and share the great blessing of
the district. Evidently even, 124
years ago one could purchase
!and with no money down and
twelve years to pay in yearly
instalments, two pounds the first
year, three pounds the second
and so on for twelve years.
These documents were evidence
of the foresight, courage and
fortitude of the early settlers.
During the business period
Mrs. W. Parker read the minutes
and Mrs. Robert Blair gave the
treasurer's report.
Next meeting will be held
November 6, to, when Miss
Lindstrom will speak on
"Bayfield, the Man • and the
Place". Mrs. Fred Clift and Miss
Jessie Metcalf served
refreshments.

Bell Canada has always urged emplOyebs to use all Possible
safety precautions when working and in repent years has stressed
safe driving habits, One of the safety groOPS in our CoMPOPY
recently circulated a report of an experiment Made by ct tire
company and a precision instrument 'maker. The astonishing
results show that' too fast, tense, erratic 'driving is not only
dangerons but saves little time, ,
Two identical cars were fitted with instruments which
registered every driving detail during a 1,000-mile trip. The
devices showed how often the driver braked, arid, how hard; how
many cars he passed and how many overtook him, and the total
driving time, One driver was told to do what we all do when we
are in a hurry — overtake when it's safe and take bends at the
maximum speed the car and our own ability will allow. The
second driver made the trip in a relaxed style, avoiding any risk
and moving as the traffic flow permitted.

GETTING ON WITH THE JOB
Yes, we are getting along with the job.. ;Last month we'
pictured the plough and crew at the start of the 'big job' of
burying cable and wire to provide an improved service to our
Clinton and Seaforth customers of the former McKillop
Municipal Telephone System„
Today we pictured our cable splicer Jim Bringloe at his job
of joining up the cables and wires to connect- you with the
Seaforth exchange office on Chalk Street, and the Clinton
exchange office on Rattenbury Street, West.
All this to provide improved transmission of your telephone
conversations locally, to your •free call areas, to direct dial to
almost anywhere in the North American continent, or dial
operator to place your call to London, England.
Yes, we are progressing, it is our aim to provide you with
good, trouble free service, fewer on your multi-party lines, and an
opportunity to avail yourself, (at small extra cost) in rural areas
with two party and individual service.
Jim is just one of our cable men working in your area who
would be glad to spend a few moments to show you what, he iS,
doing. Ask him about two party or individual service to your
home, or just dial the Business Office, 1-271-3911.
