This colorful description of a tailgater 'appeared in Canadian Underwriter magazine. "Somewhere between the fume-spouting exhaust of the tractor-trailer and the dainty white puff of the compact, we find the delightful creature known as the tailgater. Tailgaters come in assorted shapes' and sizes, all repulsive. You find them everywhere, but mostly two feet from your rear bumper. Undertakers love them, drivers hate them, empty highways frustrate them, and only God knows what protects them, A tailgater is ignorance with a weapon at its command — death — 10:30 p.m. at Harbourlite Inn. His is the diet o Dracula, the energy of 400-horsepower engine, th curiosity .of a rear bumpe inspector, the enthusiasm of horseman in hot pursuit of Lad Godiva, and the bashfulness of fullback three yards from th enemy goal lines. No one is more familiar wit the hospital emergency room ,ilore at home in traffic court. When you don't want him, he's grinning at you in your rear-view mirror. Nobody else can cram into twenty years of driving forty cars with shoved-in front ends. A tailgater is a paradox. You can keep him out of your bac seat but not out of your trunk You can charge him with highe r insurance premiums, but no with the murder of his victims You can suspend his licence, but not his driving. He's your wors enemy, but closer than your bes friend. And when he finall turns off at a tavern, he's soothing vacancy behind you car, a toothache that's stopped aching, a feeling of safety in the world. And when he gives you the snap, crackle and pop of your upper verterbra in a rear-end collision and comes to visit you while you're in traction, he has not lost his power to bring tears to your eyes. He does it with those ancient, familiar words: 'I ain't got no insurance'. " Davidge had his only problem inning of the game. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases. The next batter, Hunter, belted a single scoring two runs. Davidge struck the next batter out and with a count of two strikes one ball, Clinton's catcher Hans Leppington overthrew third ball allowing two more runs to score.
