"...Less ,; ,.. feed.
••.;
for beef
College Park, Maryland - A
concept that can result in more
beef for less feed was described
last week at the Second World
Conference on Animal
Production held at the
University of Maryland.
A team,of Canadian scientists
led by Dr. -Ian Sibbald, of
Delmar Chemicals Limited,
Montreal, Que., said the
procedure involves a yet
unnamed product which is
capable of transporting
Methionine through the rumen
or first stomach of animals such
as cattle, sheep and .goats.
Using currerit methods,
Methionine added to ruminant
feeds is larggy degraded by the
rumen,,--microorganisms and is
therepire unavailable to the
animal. The new product, by
making Methionine available,
raises the nutritive value of the
diet and will allow more
effidient conversion of feed to
meat, milk or wool.
To improve feed efficiency,
said Dr. Sibbald, Methionine is
Combined with kaolin and
enveloped in a continuous film
of triglycerides to form small
capsules which the animal takes
orally mixed with a portion of
its feed, In this form the
Methionine is, able to pass the
first stomach, but is released in
the small intestine where it can
be absorbed into the
bloodstream.
f The result, contends Dr.
Sibbald, is more efficient
production of animal protein for
human consumption and a hew
Ora of applied nutritional
research.
Delmar Chemicals Limited, a
subsidiary of John Labatt
Limited, supplies fine chemicals
to feed and pharmaceutical
mamifacturers.
