Soothsayers on Parliament
Hill, reports the Financial Post,
have noted that a white throated
sparrow or Canadabird
(Zonotrichia albicollis) has
recently proclaimed territory
just north of the Prime
Minister's East Block office. The
bird has promptly been dubbed
"Pierre", because it lustily calls
"Canada, Canada, Canada,"
doubtless in reply to Daniel, the
least flycatcher (Empidonax
minimus) calling "Quebec,
Quebec", from across the river.
Thus far, neither bird has
invaded the other's territory. Is
this peace or a temporary truce?
Farm cash receipts in the first
quarter of this year fell below
the record set in the same period
of 1967. However, the two years
were not comparable because of
the timing of final wheat
payments. These were paid
during the first three months of
last year but did not fall in the
quarter this year. Had the timing
been the same, farm cash receipts
would have been 4.4 per cent
above, rather than 15.5 per cent
below a year ago, according to
the Dominion Bureau ol
Statistics.
Cash receipts from the sale ol
cattle and calves ran about $10
million ahead of last year with
good gains in the West, more
than offsetting small declines in
the East. Receipts from the sale
of hogs were. generally lower.
Despite record cash receipts.
in 1967 and indications oI
continuing into this year, farm
expenses appear to be increasing
at a higher rate. Perm net
income in 1967 Was 21 per cent
below 1966. At $1,529 million
it was also lower than incorrie in
1965, 1953, 1952, 1951 and

Police began dragging Sunday
morning shortly after the men
arrived at the police office.
Divers from the Great Lakes

Dragging was stopped about 5

the search until about 8 p.m.
and small boats continued past 9
p.m.
Monday, only one craft
occupied by police resumed the
search. The boat swept back and
