When I first saw this commercial it was funny, but when yoe see it two or three times, the humor 10 gone. Perhaps it wasn't amusing at all, Perhaps it was , my distorted sense of humor, Is humor being overdone in advertising? This question is being asked in many advertising agencies where this type of commercial is being turned out. One agency bead believes advertising stands in danger of fallout from a humor explosion. Another says: "The joke-type humor is overdone in a hurry. After you've heard it the second or third time, it's all over." The opinion of another: "Almost everybody who's using humor shouldn't be. Every bad commercial is one that's overdone." Still all agree that humor, while already a major factor in advertising, will grow in importance. Perhaps this doesn't fall under the heading of humor, but it is always amusing when dog food commercials are shown. The family dog rushes to the dish and after two or three gulps, he's finished and the tail is wagging. Do the agency and the manufacturer of the dog food really think that they are fooling anyone? The dog is starved for two or three days before the commercial is made. It's difficult to understand how and why millions of dollars are spent on the , promotion, merchandising and selling of dog food when millions of people in the World are starving to death. I admired him because he spoke what I consider to be the truth of the matter. He didn't promise anything—and in my books that takes courage, This was one case Where a man was elected for what he didn't say. Maybe folks have learned that social improvements cost more money than we can afford without careful planning. One more thing is obvious. PET was elected by the Mier 21-year-old men and women of the. country who must have been convinced that PET was the man for the job. It is evident PET is a clever politician, a bit of an egotist, easily aroused to anger, and an unusually colourful character. Added up, this combination of ingredients could make Trudeau the greatest prime minister in Canadian history—or the worse It is a certainty though, things will not be dull. If you have detected a trace of dubious concern for Trudeau's performance you are quite observant. I'm not one hundred percent sure that PET earn the confidence the people of Canada have shown him. But I'm enough of a gambler to place some trust in the conclusions of political science students and others who'should be "in the know." They say PET is a genius—and God knows it will take a genius or a miracle to solve the economic and legislative troubles of the nation. So three cheers for PET. May Canada's new prime minister is a PET -- Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Few doubted that PET would fail in his bid kir Canada's highest office, Gloom was evident from the start in. ConServative circles, Now that it's all over I Gan reveal my true feelings about the whole affair, First of all I don't find Pierre the least bit physically attractive. He's well groomed, He's well mannered. But if Canadians had been looking for a handsome sex symbol :as a prime minister they might better have chosen John Turner or George Hees,. or even cute little • Tommy Douglas. Secondly, if Mr. Trudeau swings, then so do lots of other fellows I know — all of them much younger than PET. Again, if Canadians had selected a prime minister on his swinging reputation they should have picked somebody like Robbie Lane or the groom at the recent motorcycle wedding in London. Opposition parties made quite a' fuss over PET's smooching campaign. They laughed when the gals crowded round to buzz the prime minister. Some even thought such behavior was unbecoming to his high office. Trudeau himself explained such outward actions as , a nice pleasurable expression of favour for him —not as some torrid passion to be construed as public love-making. I didn't have any desire to kiss Trudeau—but I will admit he turned me on to a greater degree than a balding Stanfield, whose wife stood only a step to his right. That's enough to cool the ardour of any woman. And Trudeau was certainly more kissable than straight-laced Johnny Diefenbaker or bow-tied Mike Pearson, both old age pension candidates. No, I think this kissing fad this past election was brought on by a set of circumstances rare to the Canadian scene. PET was the first fairly youthful and completely unmarried male to hit pOlitics in a long ,whkle...ant,, it was, just too great opportunity to let slip by. How many women, can boast they have kissed a prime minister? Or were kissed back? It was a game, pure and simple. It wasn't anything degrading or immoral to lure votes from the ignorant. Maybe it's a whole new approach to Canadian electioneering, more like in the United States where Free vaccination International Certificates of Vaccination in the approved World Health Organization form are supplied free of charge to the travelling public. Yellow Fever Vaccinating Centres which are registered with the World Health Organization are operated at the expense of the Department of National health and Welfare in 19 major Canadian cities. Information relating to immunization requirements for international travel is available from the Department of National Health and Welfare. his decisions be wise, his actions constructive and his viewpoint respected. Now is the time to begin protecting tall-growing plants from being': damaged by the wind. One or two sturdy stakes of wood or bamboo cane will serve to support most tall garden plants. They should be tied to the stakes with string, plastic coated wires or raffia. The plants should not be tied so tightly that the stems have no room to expand. Tomato plants, delphiniums, and any other tall plants in the garden should be staked. After they have passed their flowering peak, iris plants may be divided and moved. Most iris clumps which have been growing• three or four years in good soil will be overcrowded and require division. The portions farthest from the center of the clump are , the youngest and most vigorous, and should be kept, while the older sections are discarded, A sharp knife is the best tool for dividing iris rhizomes.
