►ambling With Lucy
(Pao R. 111904)
Pear lieadera;
Lucy and
.
Carl don't know it, 44 I overheard them talking about
Rabies Vaccination Plinies being held throughout Huron Cotalty.
Lucy PaYS it isn't safe for humans to have animal pets unless
they get their anti-rabies shots. She's not thinking so Much of
us, as herself and. Carl! She hePes I won't gq off on one of
secret inissiorta the day the clinic is scheduled for Hayfield!
We'll see!
Ever since "Mr," shut hillaseff off from me for two whole
days - I Was investigating the attic behind his back When he went
out and closed the door kept close tab on him and Lucy,
I'm not So fend of her. All she does is talk at me and she won't
let me enjoy her soft bed! "Mr," pets me and so de his nephew and sons when they come, Pm very happy to know them..
They were all so surprised I wasn't hungry after being shut
up for two days in the attic, but 1 found that which appeased the
pangs of hunger! I was so happy to see Carl and Lucy that
almoat jumped up on her knee, but while she didn't say "No!, No!"
her look was so forbiddiog that I withdrew my paw from her knee
and contented myself with purring around her legs,
I've been having great fun helping Carl with the garden. The
first planting of corn is well up now. And last week after he'd
made a drill for the second planting of radish, I rolled the ground
ahead of him.
What do Yen think he did one day? Weeded some Parsnips and
onions and put them in a basin to eat- qambs quarter' he called
it. I won't eat any of their food now.
Carl's little dwarf apple trees were planted under my super,
vision, and I'm going to try and keep the rabbits, mice, moles
and voles away from them, They are leafing out nicely after all
the rain. I even helped him dig the trench for sine things they
call "glads" for Lucy.
Somehow or other, I cannot see why they make such a fuss
over birds. They are very cross if I catch one, I have my eye
on that pet chickadee that sings to Carl and follows him around.
It even flies into the back porch and drinks my milk! If "Mr."
holds a tray out with food scraps, it flies down and helps itself
except when I'm there. He didn't knowthat I was at his feet one day
and wondered why Mr. Chickadee stayed up on the clothes line.
I just ignore the starlings, I learned that they are tough old birds,
to eat.
Carl doesn't like starlings, either, and was told • where some
were nesting. But Lucy- reminded him that they were imported
to Canada to cope with the corn borer. And Carl acknowledged
that they seem to get, quite a few grubs while they are walking
about the lawn.
These "birdie" people make my whiskers bristle! Why do they
not pay more attention to cats. I pretend I'm snoozing in the big
chair but I aear them talking on the telephone and to each other!
Lyle Hill reported seeing a blue bunting and flocks of gold
finches on May 20 in conversation with Carl Mrs. Lloyd
Scotchmer sees blue buntings at the back of their place. Mrs.
J. E. Howard tells Lucy there are quite a few around, also
Blackburnian Warblers (that's what Lucy was stretching her
neck to see one rainy Sunday but her eyesight isn't as good as
mine). And Mrs. Howard reported a masked warbler and a
Bullock's oriole on June 6. She also recalls seeing the latter
during migration last autumn so doesn't know whether he is
pausing here in migration or nestingatherplace. He is a Western
bird and not supposed to be any farther East than Saskatchewan.
I don't like orioles. I caught a nice tender young Baltimore
last year, thinking to enjoy a tasty morsel, but "Mr." took the
broom to me, and when I ventured back to the scene, he had
buried it deeply in the ground!
I'm tired of all this talk about birds! I've got the Rabies
Vaccination Clinic on my mind. Why don't they vaccinate birds,
too? I remain Sandi the cat:
