Bounty of Baby Booties
Shirley Keller
.1,F11k .
It was a solemn moment
our holise the other day when
our, baby's new shoes arrived.
The little White boots whiclibad
served him so faithfully 4or
well over a year were being
retired to •allow a larger hOle,
less set to carry him the next
ten :thousand miles or So,
At the switchover I thoudit
about the first day my small
•son had worn those now shat by
hard-soled shoes. Then he was
still, unsteady on his feet and
the heavier boots slowed him
down considerably, 1 remetn
ber I Wa$ gratefill for that.
As I turned the old shoes
over in my hand I noticed that
the soles were coming loose at
the toes. That came from •drag.
ging his feet to stop his kiddy
car now that the nice weather
allowed him to 'be out on, the
sidewalk. At two years old a
fella doesn't know about brakes
so nature provides an instinct
in little boys which prompts
them to scrape their toes along
the ground to act in the same
capacity as the balloon on a jet.
And it makes a nice rubbing

sound, too - delightfully louder

and drag with the other.
The laces. No, it wasn't this
pair he took out of the shoes
and threw in the toaster, We
ha4 to cut those two off the
heating element in half-inch
lots. This may haye been the
shoe laces I rescued from the
toilet bowl or no, I think
these were used to fasten my
wrist Watch to the bottom of
the mop,
These bbots had carried him
to the top of the cupboards, to
the bottom of a mud puddle,
to the edge of the highway,- to
the back of the neighbor's house-
the back of the neighbor's-
house, under the car, over the
railing, through that patch of
poison ivy, around the block, in
the garden, on the new bed-
spread. They had travelled
through fog and sleet and snow
and rain and sunshine and
rested only while my young son
slept.
The more I thought about
discarding these shoes, which
had played such an important
part in the development of our
boy - and the fulfillment of
our lives - the more I hated to
do away with them. At first
they sat up top of the silver '
chest just as ornaments. Then
I thought of filling them with
dirt -and planting flowers. Fin.
ally I remembered a pair of
bronzed baby boots which had'
been mounted on book-ends. •
Now I'm a lady-in-waiting
again. I'm so excited I can
hardly contain myself until
those loveple little lealhers
are returned to me as tiny
bronze •reminders that my baby
was once small and cuddly and -
bad just like all other little
boys. •
My son, in the meantime, has
, adjusted to his new shoes. Al.
ready the toes are scuffed and
the laces have been chewed and
dunked and knotted. But they
aren't the first pair he wore.
Those are now small statues
overflowing with precious mem.
ories of my baby's earliest
childhood.
