When -Roger Crozier decided to end his retirement and TO turn to heckeY, I Was Only slightly Surprised, The tragedy of Roger's re. tirement in November was that a 25-Year-:old Youngster was turolpg his back On something he loved, He was also turning his back on a highly-paid pro. fession that boasts an outstared. ing Pension Plan, That a. National Hockey League goaltencler should de. aide to quit is,net sprpriaing in itself. They are the most courageous men in any sport or occupation,. I doubt that I would Want to stand out there night after night and face.bul- let-fast shots. To ine it is not surprising that a goalie should come down with a case of nerves. They stand alone, in full view of the crowd, and their mistake is the last one before the red goal light goes on. They can't skate to the bench and lose them- selves among their teamnia.tes. A goalie can only stand and wait for the next attack while listening to the boos of the crowd. There is no way a goaltender can shed his frustratioes either, He can't skate out of his net and throw a bodycheck. Theirs is not an enviable job. But back to Roger. He admits now that when he retired he overlooked one thing- his love of the game. "I thought I could go home and forget about hockey," he said when, he came back. "It didn't work out that way. The first couple of weeks at home were wonderful, but after that there wasn't a day I wasn't reminded of hockey in some way. If I read a newspaper I'd see mention of it. If I looked at television, it was the same. * * * "Well," exclaimed the sweet old lady, after tasting her first cocktail, "it tastes exactly like the medicine my husband has been taking for 40 years." Fertunately I have never had that feeling. Mast confess there Wale been times during a game or a prao. lice rye felt like packing it up for that day, but I've never wanted to quit hockey.
