Q, Why are there two numbers on my income tax form? A. The number which is printed on the forni along with your name and address is a special account number which is made up from letters from your surname, your date of birth and other identifying factors. If your name is Smith this number positively identifies you among the 50,000 Smiths in Canada. It also enables the computer to match your return with that of last year and• thus speed up processing. The other number shown on the income tax form is the social insurance number, which is used to record payment into the Canada Pen. sion Plan and Unemployment In. surance matters. In any corre. spondence with the Department it is important to use the account number or social insurance number 'to avoid any unneces. sary delay in locating your, file, Q. Is it necessary for a farmer to pay his income tax by instalments? A. The Income Tax Act re. quires payment of 2/3 of the tax by December 31 and the balance by the following April 30, Q. I am a married man, aged 67. My wife, became, 65 in 166'7, When' Completing iny 1966 income tax return, I claimed $1,500 basic exernP• tion for myself, plus $1,000 for my wife. Now that she is over 65, may I increase that exemption for her to $1,500? A. No, The additional $500 exemption applies only to you. Of course, if your wife files a return of her own she would be entitled to claim the addl., tional $500 exemption on hex return, but this would not affect your exemption for her. Q. I belong to hospital and medical insurance plans at work. Can I claim the pr emiums for these plans as medical ex. penses? A. No, However, you may claim medical expenses paid for you by an insurance plan, as well as hospital expenses except those covered by a pro.. vincial government hospital plan. The statements you re. ceive from the plan should show whether or not the amounts can be included in your claim for medical expenses. Q. Can a farmer pay wages to his family and claim the expehse? A, Full details will be found on page 6 of the Farmer's and Fisherman's Guide. Q. I started a new business in 1967. Can you tell me what depreciation I can claim? A. Capital cost allowance, sometimes referred to as de. preciation, is allowed as a de. duction. The rates vary with the type (class) of asset. 'For example: Class 10 -cars trucks etc. 30%; Class 6-frame and stucco braidings 10%; Class 3 - steel, brick and concrete buiIdiags, 5%. Rates for other assets may be obtained by reference' to the Income Tax Regula, tions or at your local district taxation of. !Jae. Special rates may apply to assets of a, farmer or fisher. man. For these, see the Farmer'sand Fisherman's Guide. Q, I paid $1,500 in alimony to my former wife last year. Can I claim all of this or just the married exemption of $1,0011? A. Provided it qualifies under the Inoome Tax Act, you may deduct the whole $1,500. There is no dollar limit on the amount of alimony that may qualify for dednction from income. Q. Is the reserve portion of a patronage dividend taxable? A. Yes, both the cash and reserve portion must be in. eluded in income except in cases of consumer goods. Q. I am supporting a brother who is attending university. Can I claim him as a dependant? A. If his income for, 1967 was not more than $950 and no one else claims him as a de. pendant you.may claim exemp. lion for any amountyouc, ontrib. uted to his support up to $550., If your father, or brothers and sisters are also contributing to his support and the total contrib. uted is more than $550, you will have to agree among you. selves how the $550 exemption will be divided among you. Q. My child became 16 during the year and I received family allowance for the first part of the year. Can , I calico $550 and do I have to repay the family allowance to do this.? A. You can claim the $550 exemption for a child who reached 16 years of age at any time during the year, the amount of family allowances received for the child during the year before his birthday does not make any difference and does not have to be repaid in order to claim the exemption. Q. I was transferred to an. other city in 1967 arid we decided to rent, rather than sell, our house. I understand I can de.• duct capital cost allowance from my rental income but what do I use for a capital cost figure? We lived in the house for years and, with the improvements we made It's worth a lot more than we paid for it originally. A, You are entitled to claim capital cost .allowance on the amount you could have sold your home for when you started to rent it, minus the value of the land. Hensall At the 1434P411.
