Take the Boston Bruins this season, They have trouble when defensemen Bobby Orr and Teddy Green are out. Of course the Brunie geneeally have big» ger men up front this year and that's helping them, Butdespite their big scorers and bigger forwards, they have a rough time when Orr and Green are not in the lineup. My club, the Detroit Red Wings, are well aware of the difference one or two players can make. Take the loss of Doug Barkley. The eye injury that ended his career on Jane nary 30, 1966, was one of the most tragic accidents in hockey. Big Doug was right at the height of his career when it all ended in a fraction of a second. It was a tragedy for the Red Wings, too. They lost an All. Star defenseman and a possible Hart Trophy winner. Besides being an outstanding defenseman, big and tough, Doug was also a real good man on the point on our power-plays. He had a booming, heavy shot. When we lost him that year, we also lost the Stanley Cup. Then think of the players our manager-coach, Sid Abel, bad to trade' away in his efforts to fill the vacancy left by Barite ley. Think, too, how powerful the Red Wings would be today With Barkley on defense. That's the difference a play. er can make. I think everybody on the Red Wings vividly remembers the weekend Doug was enjured. We were playing a home-and-home weekend series with the Chicago Black Hawks. The first game, on a eater.. day night, was in Chicago. It was bitter cold ' and snow. big. Alex Delvecchio scored for us with less ' than a min- ute left to gain' a 4-4 tie. Neither club could get aplane out for Detroit that night and we both had to rush to catch the overnight train. I remem• ber we all stood out in the cold waiting for our bus to take us to the station. Chicago is one place where it can really get windy and cold. Standing there Doug was hold- ing a towel to the side of his face where he had been nicked ey a stick. Then the next night, Sunday, it was In the second period when Doug Melees stick flew up accidentally and hit Doug in the eye while he was try- ing to keep the peck in the Ceipago zone, It was all .over. The Black Hawks won that game 5-1. Doug has never been bitter about the accident. As special assistant toS id he works out of Olympia. He goes en scouting trips and also spends considerable time in the Cep.. tral League looking at players and visiting our farm club at "fort Worth, Texas. If an accident like that ever happens to me, I hope I have the courage and heart to face it like Barkley. Ponies hobbled by Listowel Clinton Ponies lost the first two games to Listowel in the PeeWee three out of five series. In Listowel January 31, Robbie Stirling and Brian Ken. nedy scored for Clinton in the first period. Listowel scored the only goal In the second. Then Raymond Burns gave the Ponies a 3-1• lead, scoring on a 'breakaway in the early minutes of the third. But the Listowel boys banged in three goals in the late min. utes of the game to win 4-3. Listowel outplayed Clinton completely in the fleet two per- iods, building up a 5-0 lead.
