Wee s January 22 when Bill Nedi. ger ' son of the former Clin. ton hockey player of the same name, fired the winning goal at 7:32 of the third period making the score 3 - 2. Last time these two clubs met, Oakridge defeated Clin. ton 7 - 1. Oakridge scored early, in the first period, andRobbieStirling tied the score at 7:33 on an assist from Danny Colquhoun. The second period was rough with each team earning three penalties. Clinton captain Mike Anstett received a five-minute penalty for fighting. Oakridge forged ahead with a second goal at 9:53 of the second period. With Anstett and Joe Mac. Mahon sitting in the sin-bin, Ray Burns stole the puck from an 0a.kridge defenceman and scored on a breakaway to tie the game again. Burns and Steve Cook-the two penalty killers, saw a lot of service in the second and third periods. After Clinton racked up three penalties in a row, Nediger scored the winning goal with a screen shot on,,a power play from the point. Richard Welch was a stand- out in the Clinton goal in the third period, stopping many tough shots. Outstanding in their penalty killer. roles, Burns and Cook broke up many dangerous rush. es with persistent checking. One of the major conversa. tion PteCeS around the National ./.iockey League this season ie the Boaten Bruins. The .queattoe, seem's to be "Are they for real?" I Would think so. They have size, spirit, scoring pinch and Seem pretty solid at the blue lips, These are the ingredienta of a playoff contender, In past seasons, those eight years the Breins finished out of the playoffs, they had trouble with goals against. They had players who could get their share of ,goals, but the team would give up too many. That doesn't seem to be the case this year, although in the really early going the Bruins, had a favorable home schedule, The tough months in the schedule are February and early March. This is when the muscles seem to ache more and the equipment seems heavier, Maybe the Bruins will find that out this time around but they have bigger bodies with bigger muscles wearing the uniforms this season. That has got to help them, They have Phil Esposito,Ken Hodge and Eddie Shack. All new faces and all big fellows. John Bucyk is a big fellow, tee, and he's having a big year. In other years, the Bruins had numerous players on the small side. They were good little guys, but in the third period these smaller players can get tired. Especially if they have no big guys (physically big) to help out. Can Boston hang in there all the 'way? Well, leave that question up to wiser heads than mine. frowever, I still haye some pretty vivid memories of the New York Rangerg of last season. They went out of the gate in a cloud of dust, In the second half, the dust settled some, but the Rangers still had a point cushion to give them a playoff spot. How can I forget? Our Red Wings were behind them when the 70th game was played. It adds up to this: Points gained in the first half of the season are just as important as those in the second half. Seme. times, too, they are a little easier to come by. In the first game of a triple. header January 18 at the Corn. munity Centre and Arena, Clin. ton Bantams blanked Zurich10- 0. Clinton scored two goals in the first period, and four in both the second and third to out. clas a weak Zurich team, Scorers were: Wayne Cante. loll (3), Brian Edgar (2), Gary Cummings (2), Barry Edgar, (2) and Bill Cantelon. Only four penalties were call. ed. In the second game Clinton Midgets walloped Seaiorth 9-1. Stew Mustard scored four goals for Clinton, backed by Hal Flaro with three, and Bob Clinton Colts lost a eloSe one to Listowel away from home January 18, wipding up on the wrong, end of a 4,3 score, two hard, Listowel scored quiek goals at 15;40 and 16;75 of the first period with no answer from Clinton. But in the secondperiodafter 10 minutes of play,. Pic Cela quhoun pushed the puck in the Listowel net on a rebound from Keith Allen, Bud Boyce took thepuck right to the goalie, 34 seconds later Langille and Bill Stirling with one each. Coach Bill Crawford found new scoring power in Hal Fiero, of Varna, who was converted from a defenceman to a for. Ward. Game three saw Clinton Juv* eniles defeat Seaforth 4-1. Butch Fleet's goal in thefirst period gave Clinton an early lead which they never lost. Captain Don Bartliff scored at 16:09 of the second period, completing a play on passes from Derwin Carter and Rick Fremlin. Seaforth scored at 18:26 of the second period, the only shot to get past goalie Dennis "Ruby" Fleischauer. Kirk Landon scored in the third, and Butch Fleet's second goal of the game wrapped it up for Clinton. BLUE WATER LEAGUE Team standings: Sharks, 78; Suckers, 83; Crabs, 6'7; Min. vows, 71. The second period ended tied 2-2, Berfiltz scored a hotly dis. puted goal at 9:05 of the third period. The Clinton goalie, Black, tried to stop a high shot which hit the tip of his glove and dropped behindhim near the goal crease. The boy on the light claimed the puck had travelled Town Pee-Wees beat Seaforth Clinton P ee-Wees, goaltender earned another shutout January 20 when the team defeated Sea.' forth 6-0 in an exhibition game on opponents' ice. Robbie Sterling, returning to the line-up after a three-week layoff, scored the first and last goals for the Clinton team. His first goal was a beauty. After taking a rink-wide pass from John Sichky, he broke in alone to score. In the second period, Mike Anstett scored with two rebound goals and Brian Kennedy tallied with one. John Sichky was the Clinton team's other scorer, driving in 'a long shot from the point, CATHOLIC MIXED Team standings: Block Bus. ters, 63; Pin Heads, 34; Stone Throwers, 25. Five minutes later, Liatoyfel forged ahead on Goghlin's second goal of the night. Bud Boyce Scored within one minute, but Clinton players were unable, to tie the game. again. After Bud Schoenals pulled the goalie for the final minute, Harvey Dale missed' a heart. stopper with only eight seconds left in the game. Mustard's three helps Midgets A three-goal effort by Stew Mustard helped Clinton Midgets beat Mitchell 4-1 in a January 18 game at the community centre and arena.
