HOCKEY TIPS
THE SLAP SHOT
This is one of the big weapons
in today's hockey. First, eye the
target with your stick square to
the net. A split second before you
pull the trigger, take a fast glance
at the puck, then let go. On the
'follow-through, your stick should
be pointing directly at the target. so

By Gordie Howe
Almost every professional
athlete I know is superstitious.
Some, of course, are more so
than ethere.
Silly, eh? That's what I keep
telling myself, and this one.
man dialogue has been .going on
for the 22 seasons that I've
been in the National Hockey
League, I hate to admit it,
but I still haven't convinced
myself.
In my early years in the
league, superstition bothered
me. I'd actually worry about
things. Like if things were going
good, I'd try to keep eating the
same foods and doing the same
things day after day. It didn't
quite get to the point where
I'd keep wearing the same
clothes, but almost.
Happily, I'm not quite that
bad now, But I still have my
quirks. If things are going good,
I still like to stick to the same
foods day after day.
Over the years, superstition
has provided numerous good
laughs for the members of our
team, I remember a couple of
seasons back we were playing
a Saturday night game in To.
ronto and our manager—coach,
Sid Abel, was wearing his lucky
suit.
The Leafs, I recall, were
leading by one goal going into
the final minute of play when
Paul Henderson scored for us to
gain a tie, When Henderson
scored for us to gain a tie.
Sid leaped up to shout in his
excitement and tore the knee
completely out of his lucky
suit.
I'm sure he was convinced
We would never get another

during the 19500 s, He was also,
I believe, one of the most super.
stitious hockey playere ever to
lace on a skate, It was even
worse during the playoffs. ti
If you roomed with Bob during
the playoffs, he'd make you
count the coins in your pocket
and if they added up to 13,.
well, you had to throw one
away.
I remember, too, that he
had a lucky suit. It was an
old, tweed job and I'm sure
it dated hack to Year One. Any.
way, we were in Boston and he
had the suit, All the fellows
on the team chipped in and
bought a new suit after making
sure we had Bob's correct size.
Then while we wereoutpractic.
ing, a couple of the fellows
went into the ciressingroom and
snipped the seams on Goldham's
lucky suit — the seams on the
pants and coat.
Bob returned to the dressing
room and started to put on the
pants. Of course, the expected
happened, It came apart at the
seams. Between "cuss" words,
he tried to tape it together with
surgical tape, Then he started
to put on the coat and one
sleeve fell off. The whole room
collapsed in laughter.
Goldham was fuming. Then we
presented him with the new
suit and it fitted perfectly. But
he still had the last word.
Maybe Bob was surprised, but
he was just as talented without
his lucky suit as he was with
it.
"I'm too mad to thank you
now," he said as he left the
room, "I'll do. it when I Cool
