His many friends here wish Ray continued success in that long trail that leads to a chance wih the parent club, the Cleveland Indians. Following are parts of the writeups of the game and Huey Aynesw.orth’s sports column: Ray Yelle, the big, burly righthander from London, Ont., Canada, pitched the Fort Smith Indians into undisputed posses ion of first place in the Western Association last night at An- rew’s field as he set the Musko gee Giants down with five scat tered bingles to win 8-0. Besides pitching his second shutout and seventh win of the season, YeUe hit his second triple in as many games to drive in two runs in the fifth inning. When Ray Yelle beat the Giants last night, he became the first Indian pitcher to hold a decision over every other club in the league. Although the big right-hander has a 7-3 mark, he lost his first two games. Musko gee knocked him out twice at the outset of the season, winning 18-5 and 8-7. ... He then beat Salina 6-3 on a four-hitter. Then Salina fell again 9-7. The Hutchison Elks handed Ray his third loss, 3-1, although he hurled a seven-hitter. The last five times Yelle has hurled he’3 beaten Joplin 2-1, Salina 1-0, Hutchison 5-4, Topeka 18-5 and Muskogee 8-0. That’s five in a row and in those five he’s given up only 25 hits and 10 runs. MAN AND MOUNT ABOUT TO PART —■ An entry in the steer-riding contest at Calgary’s famous Stampede appears about to become, airborne as his mount bucks and turns. The Stampede attracted thousands from the U.S. and Canada. —Central Press Canadian Hand Clinton First Defeat The home town girls ’ball team brought about the first de feat of the season for Clinton when they edged the visitors 6-3 Wednesday night. The game was won in the first inning when M. Hunting, for Clinton, walked four Exeter players and two hits by Hunter- Duvar and Tuckey made for a total of five runs in the inning. From there on in, the Clinton team settled down to play ball but couldn't come up from under Exeter’s lead- It was clearly a pitcher’s game. Hun king walked eight batters and struck out six. Taylor, for Exeter, struck out seven Clinton players and walk ed only one. Only four hits were permitted Exeter by the Clinton team. Lindenfield was credited with the only double of the game, and Tuckey, Taylor and Hunter- Duvar each hit singles. For Clinton, Brandon was on top with three singles. Taylor pitched six no-hit, no run innings, and two runs were scored each by Tuckey, Taylor and McKnight. A run by Mc Nair, for Ilderton, in the fifth inning made the losing team pick up their spirits and put some fight into the game only to have it knocked out from under them when coach Urb- shott took first baseman Agnes Preble from the game. From there to the end it al most was too easy for the Greys. The second Ilderton run was scored by E. Scott. He had been injured when a cow fell in his foxhole. Beaver’s Hardware Rain Stops Play-Off Drives, Fight Looms For Championship The rain stopped any play-off drives that might have de veloped this week. Half of the eight games scheduled were postponed because of the weather. It looks like the biggest fight in the league will be for championship honors between Dashwood, Mitchell and Zurich. Dashwood is currently leading the loop with 13 wins against three losses, giving them a six point lead over both Mitchell and Zurich. However, the Legionaires have three more games to play than Dashwood. There are 22 bouts left in the league — 13 on the regular schedule and nine postponed. But they’ll probably make little difference to the final run downs. Strathroy and St. Marys will battle it out for the “B” honors. The two teams have split their games over the season, Strath roy winning their home game 3-1 and St. Marys turning the tables 18-7 when they met in the stone town. There could be a small race between Exeter and Centralia in the “C” division. Mitchell, and the two Clinton teams- are al most assured of play-off posi tions. While Exeter is leading Centralia now, the airmen, could, beat the locals out in the re maining tilts. Unless there’s going to be a three-way playdown in the “D” loop, Dashwood and Zurich will contest the title in what should be a. real series. Coupled with the fact that the two towns are always good rivals, the teams are pretty well evenly matched. If all “D” teams play in the finals, Lucan will complete the series. This week, Dashwood dropped its third game of the season, this time to Strathroy. Playing under the lights, the homesters whalloped the league leaders- 11-1. Tuesday night, Dashwood downed Centralia RCAF 8-1. Bob Storms was the winning hurler. He struck out 10 and held the Flyers to four scat tered hits. Mitchell and Zurich continued their deadlock for second place honors. The Legionaires edged Clinton RCAF 5-3 Tuesday night while Zurich swamped Station’s, Legion Vie For Honors Statton’s and Legion are cur rently whooping up a last ditch fight for the rec softball league honors. This Thursday night could tell the tale if Statton’s take the vets. However, if the tables are turned, the two teams will be deadlocked for top spot. That will mean they’ll play a game that was postponed earlier in the season. When the league champs are named, all four teams will par ticipate in the playoffs. Tuesday night, Maroons won their first game when Centralia failed to show for the game. On Monday night, Legion took Centralia 17-6 to chalk up their Sixth win of the season. Besides the Dashwood victory, they edged Lucan 8-4 Tuesday night. ■> Reports from Lucan indicate that Roy Stanley has given up his post as manager of the inter mediates and the juniors are now holding the -Irish fort. They were knocked into last place last week when Centralia whallopej them 20-5. Morrissey Horses Win At Northville Two horses of the same family, a brother and a sister, won races at the Northville track. Michigan, last week. They were Jack Morrissey’s Banner Grattan and Miss Donna Direct. Banner Grattan won his first start this year in the good time of 2:11 Saturday night. Earlier in the week, Miss Donna Direct, a full sister to Banner, captured a race. She has started nine times this year and never placed out of the money. Jack Morrissey, who is reeve of Stephen Township, purchased Banner Grattan from Charlie Godbolt.
