The amount of earth and rock to be removed is estimated at 21 million tons and consider able progress has been made since the project started in the spring of 1951. The tunnel itself is 51 feet, more than the height of a four- storey building. Rock from the 300 foot level is brought to the surface through five different shafts and is conveyed away by trucks over 25 miles of especial ly-built roads. Some magnitude of the work may be gained from the fact that trucks carrying an average load of approximately 30 tons will have to make over from each shaft. This is 00 trucks a years, or a total of day from the five shafts. It is expected that, four units of the new station will be in operation in 1954 and three ad ditional units in 1955 develop ing some 700,00 horse power, The whole planned with ing the great the Falls.
