Stephen Council
—Continued from Page 1
someone else should be given a
chance.
Wellington Haist said “This
has been a terrible year foi* me.
I ve been the lone ranger. Every
thing I brought up at council
meetings was no good. We need
a change.”
He said he had advocated the
renovation of the township hall
which could be made into a com
munity centre. He estimated it
would cost somewhere in the
neighbourhood of $5,000 and
grants would be received from
the provneial government. The
otliei' council members turned it
down, he said.
Candidates
Jack Morrissey, proposed for
reeve, said he thought it was un
fair that he was defeated at the
polls during -the last election.
He said a new council had
been elected bee a*u s e of a
“grudge” vote. He said the pre
sent reeve had promised lower
assessments and lower taxes.
“The only place we’ve had low
er assessments is on the Oak
wood subdivision,” He felt more
roads should be widened. He
said he would run for reeve be
cause “I didn’t like the deal I
got last year.”
Former Reeve
Former Reeve Elmei' Lawson
doubted the wisdom of paying
the $1,200 account the township
received from the Ausable Au
thority. “Surely they (the present
council) didn’t pay the bill just
because it was presented to
them. We thought we could get
a bettex* deal on it.” He also said
“the Exeter bunch pulled a fast
one on us" in connection with
the Exetei’ High School account,
although he didn’t explain the
circumstances.
• Elmer Pickering, nominated
for councillor, said he -had been
to the county council several
times and the men there had
told him Stephen should elect the
very best man they -could get. He
indicated it was foolishness “to
send anybody up there just for
a joke.”Ray Morlock, another propos
ed councillor, said lie wouldn’t
accept the nomination.
Ed Gill, although undecided
about standing for council, said
lie felt the west end should have
a representative.
Gordon Itatz, who was nomin
ated for council, was also uxx-
decided about running. As pre
sident of the Stephen Federa
tion of Agriculture, he urged the
farmers to pay their two-fifths
of a mill taxes for federation
work. He said it was surprising
how little support of the federa
tion there was in Stephen.
