Jul5:S27c AUCTION SALES angle propounded: it is a fact that on of t. ____ the new old-age per- ] sons could he paid without lay ing new burdens on an already over-taxed and docile people. At the same time it is obvious that Mr. St. Laurent is sound in his reported belief that the people should be made to realize that the luxury of a universal old age pension is not free beer . . . What might be done to resolve the difference would be to have Mr. Abbott reduce a couple of taxes which obviously contribute to the high cost of living and to impose another tax specifically denoted as a tax on producers for the aid and comfort to the aged, whether they need it or not. Better still, let everyone pay an annual premium to build his pension . . . The most certain way of halting the rising cost of living would be to reduce the sales tax, which is an element in the cost of everything the consumer buys, including bread and the intimate garments of the newborn child. Next would be a reduction in the corporation tax, which is not a tax on corpora tions (excepting on these _ few that cannot increase their prices) but the excessive current > will be picking , apples and Green-1 from Sept. 1S-26.
