For Livestock
The Agricultural Department
stepped into civil defence Friday
with the establishment of an or
ganization to protect the cqup-
try’s livestock population against
bacterial or biological warfare.
Known as the Animal Health
Emergency Organization it will
be headed by Dr. T. Childs, the
department’s veterinary director-
general.
It will detect, report and iso
late diseases which might be
spread by an enemy bent on cur
tailing and destroying food of
animal origin.
Department officials said world
scientists have warned that bio
logical attack now has been so
perfected that it could be used
successfully in wartime to strike
a crippling blow at food resour
ces.
The organization will have
committees in all provinces, head
ed by the Federal Department
District Veterinarian. Member
ship will include officals of both
the Federal and Provincial
partments of Agriculture
veterinarians.
The committees will give
struction in the detecting and re
porting of abnormal conditions
associated with animal disease.

ST. LAURENT AMONG FRIENDS — On a tour of the west
ern provinces, Prime Minister St. Laurent stopped at Duck
Lake, Sask., where he talked to Indians who had known his
sister, a nun, stationed there for several years. At St. Paul,
Alta., he said the North Atlantic Treaty caused inflation and
high taxes, but was well worth the cost. —C.P.C.
