He said he had picked up two hitchhikers on his way from Walkerton and all he could remember was waking up in a ditch nearly frozen. I-Ie staggered to a farmhouse suffering from a fractured skull. After a short prayer service, Mrs. R. Dickens, the hostess, served a dainty lunch, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Carroll and Wayne spent Monday in London and visited with Mr, and Mrs. C. Ings. Mr. and Mrs. >D. Maguire and Lee have moved into the apart­ ment at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Dickens. The community extends a hearty welcome to them. Mr, and Mrs. H, Davis, Janet, and Mr, J. Barker were Sunday guests at the home of Mr. Mrs. A. Bale, of Tavistock, The snowplough was a come sight on most roads past few days. Mr. and M'rs. H. Noels family, of Aylmer, were week­ end guests with Mr. and Mrs. M. McDonald. The ladies of St. >Patrick's Church are invited to the rectory at Kirk ton for the annual meet­ ing of the W.A. on Wednesday, December 7. Let us have a full attendance. Mr. R. Dickens spent Monday at the home of Mr. Robert Cole­ man while Mrs, Coleman and Mrs. Dickens spent the day in London. Mr. and Mrs. M. Mr. Leonard Merner spoko on the subject “Are We Good Farmers?” A lively discussion followed: Financial success is not the main standard to go by in judg­ ing a good farmer. The factors important in judging a good farmer are as follows: 1. Keep­ ing his farm and home in repair. 2. Keeping good stock. 3. Keep­ ing his wife well dressed. 4. Keeping his machinery and fences in repair. 5. Most important, keeping the fertility of his soil up. The farmers in our commun­ ity could improve their efficiency by co-operatively owned machine­ ry . The discussion was followed by a contest. The hostess served a delicious lunch. Solos were sung by Harry Hern and Lucille Boyce and a humor­ ous skit was presented by Jack Stewart, Anna Brock, Jim Row- cliffe and Harold Pym. A Perth county junior farmer, Ross McPhail, of Cromarty, won district honors in the public speaking contest. Ross spoke on “The Four Corners of the Com­ munity?’, Second prize went to Stewart McEwan, of Clinton, rep­ resenting Huron county, speaking on “The Advantages of Farm Life?’ Harry Dougall, of Exeter, pro­ vincial director, was chairman for the evening, z The winners will go on to a zone competition in Ridgetown on December 7. Grismore, of Los Angeles, arrived on Mon­ day from New York by plane to spend a portion of their honey­ moon with Mr. Grismore’s sister, Mrs. Edward Morlock and Mr. Morlock. Clark, whom we listed last week as, ill at her home, was taken last week to St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, where her condition is somewhat im­ proved. Mrs. J. V. Dahms, who under­ went an operation in St. Joseph’s Hospital last week, is progress­ ing favourably. We are pleased to report that Mrs. George Colter has recovered sufficiently to leave the hospital and is convalescing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Colter. Mr. EH King’s many friends will regret to learn that he is a patient in Victoria Hospital, in London. Mrs. Alvin Sims, who arrived home from few weeks seriously ill last week and again removed to wish Mrs. Sims a speedy restora­ tion to health. Mr. William Gaiser Sr. is con­ fined to his home through illness.
