THE TIMES-ADVOCATE, EXETER, ONTARIO, THURSDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 8, 1949 * I|«-------- Tpm Semple SIGNS Trucks, Windows, Store Front Signs, Gold Deaf Lettering PHONE 15531 EXETER THE BEET SUGAR INDUSTRY Failure of all three Quebec beet sugar plants built in 1881 and many U.S, failures naturally proved a serious deterrent to in vestment of venture capital in a business so risky. However, in 1902, under stimulus of a bounty from the Province, four plants were constructed in Ontario, al Wallaceburg, Dresden, Berlin (Kitchener) and Wiarton, . Even with five-year bounty aid, only the Wallaceburg plant survived. Machinery of Dresden and Wiarton factories was moved to U.S. while the Berlin Company struggled along until taken over by bondholders in 1909. Wallaceburg alone carried through to eventual success but only through an infusion of ad ditional backing provided by original founders. In 1909 the firm purchased the Berlin plant from the bondholders under the name pf Dominion Sugai' Com pany, Limited; and in 1916 built the large Chatham factory. Sugar beets, at long last, became a valuable basic crop in .Canada. CANADA AND DOMINION SUGAR CO.
