Benson W. Tixekey, formex*
reeve of tlxe village who spent
considerable time last year mak
ing arrangements for the Moody
well, used an old marine custom
when he “christened” the new
pumping system at the well last
Thursday afternoon as .officials of the P.U.C. looked on. ’
The fluid in the bottle was not
champagne, however, but a well-
known soft drink, which, by gu
odd coincidence; is distributed
by Turkey Beverages.

Members of the Exeter Lions
Club have thrown a challenge to
fellow Lions from Zurich for a
donkey baseball game .on Civic
Holiday evening in the Exeter
Community Park,
Those who have ’never seen an
athletic contest where the motive
power depended upon the slow
moving Rocky Mountain Canary
have missed about the funniest
spectable imaginable.
A ball game on donkeys is
funnier than the four Marx bro
thers, Eddie Cantor, Schnozzle
Durante, Ed. Wynn and Greta
Garbo in a barefoot spring dance
led .by Edna May Oliver.
It’s called Rocky Mountain
Donkey baseball but it can be
played just as well in this neck
of the woods. Here are the rudi
ments of the game.
The players who are local men
will take regulai' playing , posi
tions on the field each mounted
on a “jack” with the exception
of the batter and the .catcher.
When the-" battex* gets a hit he
must stride his “jack” a/nd leg it
for first base. No ball can be
pitched 'Or thrown if the player
is not astride a donkey — and
by the way, these are real, live
donkeys born, bred and trained
in Colorado.
One can easily see the poten
tial comedy of the game. Imagine
a local Lions Club membei’ com
ing into home plate on his ass.
Picture a short stop urging his
mount toward a ball and the
stubborn animal suddenly decid
ing to take a. nip out of the
third baseman’s —■ or the pitch
er’s trousers. Perhaps you can
vision a fat .man making a home
run astride a poor little donkey
about half the size of the rider.
