Continued from page 6 and Dave Riach transferred into the Brussels Club from Hickson several years ago but unfortunately our club lost both of these great members when they relocated to Blyth. Tamara will always be known as our first female member and along with Dave, our first couple.” Lions Clubs are made up of more than 1.35 million members in 46,000 clubs found in more than 200 countries around the world. Known as “Friends of the Blind”, the Lions have taken on many large scale sight conservation programs in recent years in developing countries. As a result of these initiatives, more than 8 million cataract surgeries have been funded by Lions Clubs and more than 14 million children have been screened to assess the need for eyeglasses or other vision care through a program called “Sight for Kids”. On a more local level, the Brussels Lions collect used eyeglasses which are then distributed to those in need through Lions International. The Brussels Lions Club is now made up of 31 community minded individuals who share the common goal of making our community and our world, a better place. Since receiving their charter in 1946, they have served the local community and have provided funding to countless worthwhile projects and organizations. One hundred per cent of every dollar raised by the local club is returned to the community. The club meets on the second and fourth Mondays from September to June. For addition information on the club or regarding membership, please contact club President Paul Mutter at 519-887-6117 or Membership Chair, Gord Mitchell at 519-887-6556. Retrofit program comes with education Barn fire Firefighters from both halls of the Fire Department of North Huron, as well as a tanker from the Central Huron Fire Department, were on the scene for a barn blaze on Burns Line on Dec. 12 that engulfed and claimed a large pig barn. No livestock was lost, but it took firefighters five hours to get the fire under control. Special equipment was brought in to remove the roof of the structure because, as a newer style pig barn, the floors are made of primarily plastic and aren’t safe to enter once there’s any presence of heat. No injuries were reported. A gallery of images from the blaze will be available on The Citizen’s website at northhuron.on.ca (Denny Scott photo)
