the local food bank.
History of White Gift Sunday was
read by Caleigh Hopper. White Gift
Sunday dates back to 1904 in Ohio.
The wife of a Methodist minister and
her two daughters came up with the
ideas of giving gifts wrapped in
white paper at Christmas time to
people in need.
Gifts are wrapped in white so that
they will be anonymous and so that
people who can only give a little will
not be embarrassed. There is a
Chinese tradition where all the
people gave their king a gift wrapped
in plain white paper so that every gift
would look the same. Each person
gave the king what they were able,
and the king welcomed them all. The
White Git shares in the spirit of
Christ and the God of love at
Christmas. We give gifts of love to
people in need. These gifts are often
nonperishable food items which are
distributed to people in the
community.
White Gift Sunday celebrates the
stewardship of God’s love and giving
at the time of year when we
remember the coming of the King of
Kings.
On Sunday, Dec. 23 the worship
will be Advent 4. The Christmas Eve
Service will be on Dec. 24 at 7:30
p.m.
The UCW are making beef pies on
Jan. 15 and 16. Please mark Jan. 15
on your calendar to prepare
vegetables at Donna Shaw’s at 9 a.m.
and Jan. 16 to roll out dough at
the church. Men are welcome to
come and help. Orders can be placed
with Barbara Anderson at 519-357-
3317 or Ruth Gordon at 519-357-
1375.
During the Christmas season, if
anyone would like to place a
poinsettia in the church in memory
of a friend or family member, the
flower committee would glady take
care of them for December. The
flowers could be brought to church
any Sunday during Advent or contact
Nancy Folkard (519-357-2797). If
you wish, the poinsettias can be
taken home after the Christmas Eve
worship.
We take this opportunity to wish
you all the blessings of the season.
Have fun and enjoy yourself with
family and friends. We wish
everyone a safe and Happy New Year
2013.
The community extends special
birthday greetings to Irene Lamont
who will be 80 years young on
Friday, Dec. 21.
Irene Lamont celebrated her 80th
birthday with a small gathering of
family, friends and neighbours at the
home of Donelda and Mike Cottrill
on Sunday, Dec. 16. Irene enjoyed
reminiscing with some friends she
hasn’t seen for a while.
