Season’s greetings to all and a
Merry Christmas to everyone at The
Citizen.
During this Christmas season, friends will gather and celebrate theholidays, but it is the gathering of
family that brings joy to all.
Everyone does not have their
families close by, but with the
miracle of technology, you can see
and talk to them across the world.
There will be the joy of welcoming
new members to the family and also
the pain of remembering those
family members not with us
anymore. May everyone travel
safely and enjoy their time together
with family. Merry Christmas to all
and a Happy New Year.Folks around Walton who are inhospital at this time include Howard
Hackwell in Seaforth and Margery
Huether in London and Shirley
Clark, London. We wish them all
well in their recoveries.
Our condolences to the Subject
family on the passing of Carl
Subject. He will be missed by his
wife Joanne and his children Paul,
Linda, Loretta and Cheryl and their
families. Carl was a long-time
businessman operating CJ Truck and
Auto Parts. Our sympathies to all.
The Walton and area communitywas saddened with the news of thepassing of Frances VanderVeen. She
was the wife of the late Abe
VanderVeen. She will be missed by
her six children Sylvia, Jeanette,
Andy, George, Frank and Robert and
their families. The couple had
farmed on Moncrieff Rd. since the
1970s. Our sympathies are extended
to all.
Our condolences to the family of
Ivin Shannon. He will be missed by
his children Bob, Herb, Tom, Scott,
Blaine and Sharon and their
families. Ivin was a long-time
resident on the Hullett-McKillop Rd.
until into his 90s and has been a
resident of the Seaforth Manor
Nursing Home for a time. He loved
to visit with his friends when he
stopped in at the former Winthrop
Store. Our sympathies to all.
It was there and then it was gone.
It did not take long for the
demolition of the Winthrop Store.
They started Tuesday and by
Thursday afternoon, the building
was gone and the debris trucked
away. The high-hoe is now breaking
up the foundation and cleaning up
the rest. What a difference it makes
without the building there. I have no
idea how long the building had
stood, but Doug and Gail Schroeder
had operated the store for over 40
years and had taken over the
business from another store owner. A
guess would be at least 60-70 years.
The McKillop history book might
shed some light on this question. No
matter, but it makes quite a
difference in the hamlet of
Winthrop.
The BW Trailblazers have
organized the snowmobile trails for
this year. Volunteer help has been
out putting up the trail stakes in
some areas. The many who have
snowmobiles will be hoping for a lot
more snow this year to enjoy the
sport. A trail pass might be an idea
for a Christmas gift for that hard-to-
buy-for fellow.
Our congratulations to Ron and
Daisy Schmidt who were married at
the beginning of the month. They
went on a cruise and were married in
Barbados. They were joined by
nearly 40 family members and
friends. They report a good time and
the day they were married, was the
hottest day of the week they were
away. Ron and Daisy reside in
Brussels.
The Dalton family Christmas was

Winthrop store comes down after decades
End of an era
Between Tuesday and Thursday last week the Winthrop Store was demolished. The store that
has stood likely for over 50 years had been a staple of the community for decades before
being closed earlier this year. (Photo submitted)
