Blood donor clinic scheduled for Dec. 21 at BMGCCAs we approach the Christmasholiday and turn the page on anotheryear, Canadian Blood Services isasking eligible Canadians to “Give aHoliday Miracle” by donating blood during the days aroundChristmas. Collecting blood during the holi-day season is a challenge, as manydonors go away or are busy withother activities. Yet many patients
will spend their holiday receiving
cancer treatment or undergoing life-saving surgery and emergency care.During the weeks of Dec. 24 andDec. 31, Canadian Blood Servicesestimates a need for more than25,000 Canadians to give a holidaymiracle by donating blood so that theneeds of hospital patients acrossCanada can be met. In Brussels, 65donors are needed to donate blood inorder to help meet this goal.
Platelets, which are derived from
blood donations, are of particularconcern around the holiday season.Because platelets only have a shelflife of five days, it is not possible to“stock up” ahead of time. Patientswith diseases such as cancer needlarge quantities of platelets as part oftheir treatment. It is critical that ourclinics are full of “miracle workers”over the holidays to meet the needfor platelets.
“We’d like to thank Canadians
who took the time to donate blood so
far this holiday season, but we need
that generosity to continue through
the end of the year, particularly the
days after Christmas right up to the
first week of the New Year,” says
Marisa Gatfield, Community
Development Co-ordinator,
Canadian Blood Services Southern
Ontario. “As the year draws to an
end, do something that embodies thespirit and generosity of the season—give blood. It costs you nothing, andit’ll give someone a holiday mira-cle.”There are plenty of opportunitiesto donate blood this holiday season. The next clinic will be at theBrussels, Morris and GreyCommunity Centre, Friday, Dec. 21,4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. New donorsand walk-ins are welcome. Please visit us online atwww.blood.ca or call 1 888 2DONATE (1-888-236-6283) to bookan appointment to donate today. Tohelp meet the continuing need forblood, donors who have an appoint-ment in the coming weeks are urgedto honour it.
Madill students cut

Offering students the opportunity
to miss class helped the F.E. Madill
Student Council raise money for
charity and donate $600 to the
Wingham and District Hospital
Foundation. On Friday, Oct. 19 the
Student Council hosted a movie buy-
out day at which students could pay
$2 to attend a showing of The Dark
Knight and Catch Me If You Can
instead of going to class. Six-hun-
dred-and-fifty students participated
in the event and raised $1,300.
In association with Mustangs
Making a Difference, the Student
Council donated $600 of those funds
to the Wingham and District
Hospital Foundation. The remainder
of the funds were donated to the
snack program at F.E. Madill and to
the school’s World Vision sponsor
child.
The F.E. Madill Student Council
recently received an Outstanding
Donor award from the WDH
Foundation for donating over $5,000
and this new donation brings their
total contributions to the Hospital to
an impressive $6,042. Everyone at
the WDH Foundation is happy to
know that the young people in the
community recognize the impor-
tance of, and are dedicated to sup-
porting local healthcare. Maybe the
Student Council even holds some
future Foundation Board members.
High flu case count
recorded in Huron
The Huron County Health Unit is
seeing a higher-than-normal number
of flu cases early in the season. So
far this year there are 12 reported
cases in the county. This compares to
no cases reported the same time last
year.
“So far, it’s shaping up to be a bad
flu season,” says Medical Officer of
Health, Dr. Nancy Cameron. “The
good news is this year’s influenza
vaccine is a good match against the
circulating strains of flu. Everyone
should get a flu shot. It’s the best
protection.”
You can get your flu shot from
your healthcare provider or the
health unit. This year people
over age five can also get a f
lu shot at Brown’s Pharmasave,
Wingham; Rexall Pharma Plus,
Wingham; and Rexall Pharma Plus,
Goderich.
If you do get sick, stay home from
work or school. It’s also important
that you don’t visit long-term care
facilities and hospitals.
Besides getting the flu shot, follow
these tips for staying healthy:
• Wash your hands often
• Cover your mouth when you
cough or sneeze
• Eat a well-balanced diet and get
regular exercise to keep your
immune system strong
