Council discussed how best to use
their advertising dollars at the Dec. 4
meeting, beginning with a television
spot on the Exeter-based television
station ETM.
While council had paid for a
Christmas greeting spot on the
channel last year, it was soon
brought to Mayor Bernie
MacLellan’s attention that the
majority of Huron East residents
don’t have access to ETM.
MacLellan said that while the
television spot was “cute”
highlighting the daycare centre at the
Vanastra Recreation Centre and its
children, it didn’t reach the audience
council was hoping that it would.
Deputy-Mayor Joe Steffler said
that holiday advertising dollars
would be best spent on greetings in
the municipality’s three community
newspapers. MacLellan agreed,
saying the municipality’s Christmas
greetings were likely to reach a
wider audience of their ratepayers
through local community
newspapers.
“We get more bang for our buck in
our local papers,” MacLellan said.
A motion to advertise in the
municipality’s three community
newspapers for their holiday issues
was then passed.

Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight brought a letter to council’s
attention regarding the LAS
Electricity program and how it had
saved the municipality over $23,000
in the last year.
LAS is an energy provider for
municipalities in Ontario. The
company says it is “helping
municipalities save money, make
money and build capacity.”
Knight said the program has
“worked out well” for the
municipality.

The deadline for comments on the
St. Columban wind energy project is
Dec. 21. The project has been posted
on the province’s Environmental
Registry and during that time
comments are being welcomed.
Knight said that recommendations
for comments will be made by the
Administration Committee and
correspondence will be coming to
council’s Dec. 18 meeting.
Children discuss role of the shepherd at Blyth UCContinued from page 3time. Rev. Clark held an ornament ofa shepherd in his hand and asked thechildren to pass it around. He asked
them what the shepherd was holding
and what a shepherd did? The
shepherd was holding a lamb in his
arms and some answers were that a
shepherd kept the lambs safe, guide
the sheep and protect them. It takes a
lot of courage to be a shepherd
because of wild animals. In the story
of Jesus’ birth the shepherds came to
pay their respects to Jesus and they
told the story over and over again.
Rev. Clark told them that it was
their job to tell the story of God’s
love for others. The children said a
prayer along with the congregationand went downstairs for their time offellowship. The scripture lesson wasfrom 1 Corinthians 12: 4-11 and 27-
31. The choir sang the anthem, “God
Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was “Gift Return for Exchange
Only”. It is important to renew our
spiritual gifts. We should focus on
the things God wants for us. We rob
our bodies of their spiritual gifts.
The Christmas story tells us of
three gifts. 1) Gift of words. Being
able to see the gift, seeing something
coming and to follow God’s way.
Understanding who God is, to
encourage others who are sad, know
the facts and figures and being intouch with God and knowing rightfrom wrong. 2) The Gift of sign.Like the shepherds, understanding
whether things are true or false.
Miracles are also a sign. People
being willing to show their faith and
willing to know the right thing to do.
Being able to understand our
different cultures. 3) The Gift of
Deed. To be able to be leaders, to
have compassion and to be able to
assist others. Often our gifts start out
as something else. God may have a
different gift for us as we go through
life and things will change in our
lives.
The next hymn, “We Three Kings”
was followed by the receiving of theoffering, the offertory response, “Inthe Bleak of Midwinter”, theoffertory prayer, the prayers for the
people and the silent prayers. The
last hymn, “Angels from the Realms
of Glory” was followed by thecommissioning and benediction andthe response “Emmanuel”.Everyone was invited for
coffee and treats and a time of
fellowship.

North Huron Township council
decided, on the recommendation of
Public Works Director Kelly Church,
to renew their refuse and recycling
program with Waste Management for
one year with a three per cent
increase to give Church time to
research other options.
Waste Management provided two
options for contract extensions; a two
year contract with a two per cent cost
increase per year or the
one year contract with a
three per cent increase that council
adopted.
This increase would cost $5,580
and bring the final contract price to
$191,580.
