and what to do if confronted by a
stranger is essential. Huron County
is a very safe and great place to raise
children however children can be
vulnerable at times and may
fall victim to a stranger attack if
they are unaware of potential
dangers.
A discussion with your child
about stranger safety tips will instill
confidence in your child and will
guide them in making sound
decisions. An important thing to
remember when talking to your child
is you don’t want to increase fear
and anxiety. Avoid those scary
stories and focus the conversation on
how to be safe. Be matter of fact
with your children and tell them
strangers for the vast majority are
good people and are not looking to
cause them harm.
What do children need to know?
• A stranger can look like anyone.
It is just someone your child doesn’t
know.• Teach your child to keep a safedistance from someone approaching
them.
• Children should know their
name, age, telephone number and
home address.
• Children should know when andhow to contact police in case of anemergency.
• Discuss with your child what
happens when you dial 9-1-1.
• Children should keep their
parents informed of their
whereabouts at all times.• Children should make noise, runand get to safety in case of an
emergency.
• If a child is grabbed by a stranger
they should yell and fight back.
• If your child is touched in an
inappropriate way teach your childto say, “NO” and tell your child toget away and tell an adult they trust.
• Children should be told to run
away from a stranger if that stranger
bothers them or makes them feel

and in honour of Margaret Smith by
their families. Rev. Gary Clark
welcomed everyone to the First
Sunday of Advent service. He drew
attention to some of the
announcements scrolling on the
power point. The call to worship was
the singing of two Christmas hymns,
“O Come All Ye Faithful” and
“Once Royal David’s City.”
Lighting the Advent candle were
Joan Clark and Wanita and Tessa
Bibok.
We watched a video from Rev.
Gary Patterson, United Church
moderator about giving to missions.
The first verse of “So Near We Can
Feel It,” was sung. The communion
liturgy with the response of “Angels
We Have Heard on High” was
followed by the singing of The
Lord’s Prayer. The children serving
the communion were Christina
Hoba, Connor Brooks, Brett
Glousher and Reid Button. The
adults serving communion were
Brenda Brooks, Lori Brooks and
Joan Clark. The scripture reading
was from Ephesians 4: 1-16. Floyd
Herman gave a history of the
anthem, “O Little Town of
Bethlehem” sung by the choir.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was “Spotting the Perfect Gift.” We
all dig out our Treasures of
Christmas for a short time and then
pack them carefully away. Our
special gifts of the spirit are
different. God wants us to give our
special gifts and show others that we
care. Our hearts are moved by these
spiritual gifts. God gives us the gifts
that we need. In the scriptures Paul
tells us to be teachers and leaders. If
we are happy with our gifts from
God, others will be happy too. When
we are able to spot our given gifts
we can express them to others and
we can see the gift in others.
The next hymn was “We Three
Kings” was followed by the
receiving of the offering, the
offertory response, “In the Bleak
Mid Winter”, the offertory prayer,
the prayers for the people, the
singing of the hymn, “O Christmas
Tree”, the commissioning and
benediction and the response
“Emmanuel”.
Everyone was invited for coffee
and a time of fellowship.
