Doing some good
A group of volunteers from Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church in Auburn continued with the church’s
rich tradition of participating in the Operation Christmas
Child fundraiser this year once again. This year the church’s
total collection was 1,250 shoeboxes full of items for
children who otherwise would not have received a
Christmas present. (Photo submitted)
Before Huron County Council gotdown to the business of the Nov. 28meeting, Warden Bernie MacLellansaid he wanted to clear the names ofthe remaining members of the seniormanagement team.In interviews with the remaining members of the county’s seniormanagement team, MacLellan saidhe detected a common sense ofconcern from the employees afterthe dismissal of their colleagues.Three members of the seniormanagement team, CAO LarryAdams, Treasurer and Deputy-CAODavid Carey and Director of HumanResources Darcy Michaud, were let go earlier this year, while Clerk BarbWilson resigned just days afterAdams and Carey were let go.As part of the process to hirereplacements, MacLellan and othermembers of a small committee setup for the hiring of a new CAO havebeen interviewing remainingmembers of the senior managementteam and the trend he found after
talking with them was “disturbing”.
“Some senior managers are
concerned that because of the
turnover, there’s a stigma hangingover them,” MacLellan said.MacLellan said there should be nonegativity surrounding them and thathe has never received anything butsupport from the remaining seniormanagers.“I have nothing but respect for theloyalty and dignity the departmentheads have shown,” MacLellan
said.
He added that in the wake of
losing half of the county’s senior
management team, remainingmembers have stepped up in a“huge” way, which is somethingthey didn’t have to do.

which councillor would be best for
which committee position.
Councillor Nathan Marshall said
he was concerned with the process
too. When he was elected to council
for the first time in 2010, he said he
never met with MacLellan to assess
where his skills and expertise lay, so
it would be impossible to assess for
which committees he would be best
suited.
Marshall suggested that some one-
on-one consultation with each
councillor might help make the
process better and it might help to
put councillors in the right
committee positions.
MacLellan said Marshall’s
comment was a fair one and that he
wouldn’t know much about new
councillors, that expertise is
something that just comes over time.
Marshall also suggested more
advertising through the local media
to entice more community members
to be part of these committees as
well.
MacLellan said that while he
would hate to have to turn a
volunteer away from a position, he
agreed with Marshall that it would
be nice to have so many applicants
that he would be forced to choose
among them, rather than just picking
all the applicants because positions
needed to be filled.
A motion to increase committee
position advertising was passed.
