Close losses eliminate AA Lighting from tournamentThe Saugeen Maitland Midget AALightning spent the past weekend in Whitby competing in the annualTournament of Heroes. It was a shorter visit to Whitby than the teamwould have liked, with the flu andinjuries taking their toll over thecourse of the weekend. The Lightning opened the tournament with a scoreless draw against the West Northumberland Wild. Morgan Baker turned aside all Wild shots to garner the shutout in net. The Bolts’ second game pitted them against the Whitby Wolves, a team ranked in the top three Midget- aged girls team in the country. Goaltender Shea Tiley was sharp in net stopping all but one of the Wolves’ shots. The Lightning kept pace with the host team and eventual tournament champions, but could not find the back of the net. The final score was 1-0 for Whitby. On Saturday morning theLightning faced the PeterboroughIce-Cats in a must-win situation. The girls rose to the occasion and downed the Ice-Cats 5-1. Kelly Gribbons paced the attack with a hattrick while Ashlee Lawrence and Tori Terpstra each scored singles. Assists were awarded to Miranda Lantz (2), Jordyn Sholdice, Harley Westman, Sarah Biesenthal and Lexi Smith. Saturday afternoon the Bolts faced off against their namesake, the Durham-West Lightning with the winner going on to the playoff round and the loser heading home. The Saugeen Maitland version of the Lightning opened the scoring and controlled much of the play overthe course of the game, but could nothold off the determined Durham-West team. Terpstra opened the scoring on a break-away after a nice pass up the centre from Smith. The Bolts’ second goal was a workman effort from forwards Cassidy Colhoun, Courtney Surridge and Lexi Smith. After the line controlled the puck in the Durham-West zone for much of the shift, Colhoun stuffed in a rebound from in front of the net. Durham West came back from being down on two occasions and scored the winner in the third period to take the game 3-2.
