Emily Wierenga, daughter of Ernest and Yvonne Dow of Blyth, has hit it big with her words once again, hoping to do more than sell books, but to also make a difference in the world. Her latest book, Chasing Silhouettes, has sold out six times on the online retailer Amazon and currently sits at number one atop the list of pastoral counselling books on the Canadian version of the website. Wierenga’s book deals with eating disorders and how to help a loved one through such an ordeal. Wierenga has fought the battle herself several times, coming out of the other side of the tunnel. She is now well, free of eating disorders and she is living her life with her family (she is married and has four sons, two of which are adopted). Wierenga, however, acknowledges that it is an ongoing struggle with the constant threat of a relapse. Wierenga’s new project is split into several distinct parts. It begins with her telling her own harrowing story, up through growing up with her parents and even touching on recent events. She then turns to her journalistic side and interviews her family members and friends, getting their perspective of the time she spent with an eating disorder (in Wierenga’s case it was anorexia nervosa). She then moves into theprofessional portion of the book, featuring advice and best practices from notable experts in the field of eating disorder treatment. The book then concludes with recommended prayers. Wierenga says she is also careful to touch on how eating disorders affect men, as she says that 20 per cent of modern day eating disorder cases are attributed to men. She says the advice being relayed in the book is aimed at everyone who is touched by someone with an eating disorder, from family members and friends all the way to the person suffering with the disorder. “This is definitely not the book I wanted to write,” Wierenga said in an interview with The Citizen from her Alberta home. “But it was the book I felt I needed to write.” Looking back on her own story, Wierenga said she didn’t feel like her struggle with anorexia nervosa began with her family. She said there were plenty of environmental factors, as well as a genetic disposition, but that relationships with her family and friends certainly played a part. Wierenga says that while the majority of her struggles with the disorder happened when she was younger, she had a relapse as a young mother after giving birth to her first son.
