Walton-area resident Art Bolton
received the Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee medal for his work in the
community.
The farmer and pedigreed seed
grower was recognized for his work
not only in agriculture but for his
work in the community.
“It was a great honour,” he said. “I
knew I was nominated when the
application went in ahead of time,
but you never know how things are
going to go.”
The group he shared the stage with
was a distinguished one, according
to Bolton.
“It’s a great group,” he said. “I
know a lot of them and I’ve worked
with some of them on different
occasions. It was a real honour.”
Bolton has a long history in Huron
County, as he says he has been
involved in organizations in the
community since his graduation
from the University of Guelph with a
Bachelor in Science and Agriculture
majoring in Engineering in 1955.
He became a farmer in 1959 and,
as a hobby, worked on electronics,
specifically, sound systems.
“Most of what I built is in local
churches and local centres, but my
earlier projects were portable ones,”
he said, adding that he worked on the
system in the Seaforth and District
Community Centre which has been
around for 30 years.
Bolton was appointed to several
positions by the Ontario Minister of
Agriculture, sitting on the Farm
Machinery Investigation Committee
from 1962-1964, being a member of
the Farm Machinery Advisory Board
from 1964 to 1969 which ensured
parts for machines are stocked and
sold for at least 10 years after being
released, being part of the Crop
Insurance Commission in 1970 and
sitting on the Crop Insurance
Arbitration board which gave final
ruling on claims through the crop
insurance program.
He has also been a director and
president of the Canadian Seed
Growers Association which he
represented at the Canadian National
Exhibition Association, the
Canadian Seed Institute, the Ontario
Seed Growers Association of which
he was president, the Ontario Soil
