HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2012-11-29, Page 23THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2012. PAGE 23. Continued from page 20 ratio of 163 per cent is not far off that. The 11 per cent increase in auto loans over the past year should catch our attention. Those who held off on replacing their vehicle during the recession may now be succumbing to new car ads. But financial gurus would remind us the cheapest car anyone can ever own is always the car they presently own: studies prove it’s far less expensive to maintain a used car than to buy a new one. Regarding credit cards, Randy Alcorn frankly advises, “If you use a credit card and do not pay the full amount when your bill is due, meaning that you leave a balance on which you pay interest, then you should not own a credit card.” Even if a consumer does pay it all off without interest charges, Citibank calculates that consumer will buy 26 per cent more using a credit card than they would if they were carrying cash. Alcorn notes several things about debt. It lingers. It causes worry and stress. It causes denial of reality. It leads to dishonesty. Debt is addictive and presumptuous. It deprives God of the chance to say no or to provide through a better means. It’s a major loss of opportunity. And, debt ties up resources and makes them unavailable for the Kingdom of God. As an example of debt’s deceptiveness, Alcorn offers the example of a person buying a $70,000 house with $7,000 down and a 30-year term on the remainder at 10 per cent. The $70,000 house will actually end up costing them $200,000. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, said: “God opposes usury and greed, yet no one realizes this because it is not simple murder and robbery. Rather, usury is a more diverse, insatiable murder and robbery.” Learning to “do without” or live more simply and thus avoid debt frees us from the bondage of the debtor, who is always to some degree enslaved to the lender. It also keeps us more dependent on trusting God for provision, and less ensnared to this world’s shiny (though deceptive and usually depreciating!) idols. Keeping free in our financial life liberates and resources us to concentrate on the one debt that ought (according to the apostle) to remain outstanding for us: “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13:8) St. Anne’s students prepare for holidays Living free of debt teachesus to do without says Dow Now gluten free Jessica Procter dishes out some gluten-free goodies at the annual roast beef supper held by Knox United Church at the Belgrave Community Centre on Nov. 21.
