THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2012.Council pays for airport engineering report North Huron Township Council is going to release $8,500 from reserves to pay for an airspace protection engineering report for the Richard W. LeVan Airport, however the report may never be used. Pat Newson, the Director of Recreation and Facilities for the township, requested that the money be released from reserves after it was set aside in 2010 for the project. She expected that the report wouldn’t require the total amount, stating that the estimate for the work is $7,000, and the rest would be put into the township’s general coffers, but explained that the report is absolutely necessary. She explained that the report needed to be done because the landscape of running an airport had changed. “Things are happening in the province that haven’t before,” she said. “Communication towers and wind turbines are going up and, without a zoning bylaw that prevents tall structures from invading airspace, we could be completely defenseless.” She explained that the document could make issues simple to deal with if they did arise, but did also explain that the airport needs about four kilometres of space to prevent interference with global positioning satellites (GPS) and systems that aid pilots in landing their aircraft. “We have to protect the GPS,” Councillor Archie MacGowan said. “That’s a big thing for corporate and med-evac pilots.” The report, however, will be handed over to Morris-Turnberry when it is completed as, to be adopted through bylaw, it must be handled by the township which owns the land around the airport. The airport is owned and operated by North Huron but actually is in Morris-Turnberry. Newson said that, since the airport is an asset for both municipalities, she hopes Morris-Turnberry wants to help and will use the document. She also said, in response to a question from councillor Bernie Bailey, that the cost of the report was being completely handled by North Huron. “It will be their document and their planner working on this, but this is our opportunity to provide comment,” she said. “It’s our expense and our responsibility as owners of the airport, Morris- Turnberry has been extremely accommodating in this issue now has representation on the airport board now.” Bailey was the only vote against releasing the funds to carry on with the report. The word is getting out about the virtues of North Huron Township according to Economic Development Officer Connie Goodall. “In the strategic plan it was identified that we needed to find different ways to communicate with North Huron,” Goodall said during Come see our Christmas gift and décor ideas plus many in-store specials.
