Sebastian and U21 National team take 4th place
Ty Sebastian pitched his Canadian
team to a fourth-place finish during
the Under 21 National Fastball
Tournament in Buenos Aires in
Argentina last month.
The Brussels native, now a student
at Lambton College, said that the
fourth-place finish out of 13 teams
may not sound as good as a second
or third, but that the team faced
adversity from the second they
landed.
“Everyone on the team was sick
and affected by food poisoning,” he
said. “Some people were sick for the
whole tournament, but we all felt it
somehow or another.”
Despite being ill, the team put on
a fantastic performance, losing to
each of the teams that finished above
them in tight contests.
Canada fell to gold medal winners
Argentina 1-0, went to extra innings
against eventual silver medalists
Japan before losing 3-0 and were
just edged out by the defending
champion and bronze medal
finishers Australia 3-2. They
finished with a record of 4-2 in the
round robin and 2-1 in the playoffs
and managed to score 45 runs over
the course of the tournament while
only allowing 16.
Sebastian said the experience was
a unique one.
“It was pretty incredible being
there and pretty different from what
I’ve seen before,” he said.
The tournament was a whirlwind
of nothing but baseball and rest
Sebastian said, stating that whenever
they played they would train before
and/or after the game and they
would have full-day training if they
didn’t have a game.
“It was pretty hot, so we had to
rest a lot too,” he said.
Sebastian also received a
scholarship from the Softball
Canada’s Hall of Fame through the
Claude Deschamps Memorial Fund
earlier this month.
Previously, Sebastian played for
the Wiarton Red Devils who played
for the Ontario U19 Men’s Canadian
Fast Pitch Championships where he
was named Most Valuable Player as
the team took first place.
As for the future, Sebastian said
that nothing was decided just yet.
“I’ll continue to play wherever I
can, but I have no plans right now,”
he said.
Strong finish
Despite some initial setbacks with some illness on the
team, the Canadian Under 21 team took fourth place at the
world fast pitch championships in Buenes Aires. Ty
Sebastian of Brussels, pictured above bringing the heat
against Denmark, was a member of that team. (Photo
