Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Nov. 25
were Brenda and Lori Brooks.
Ushering were Cliff Snell, Brenda
and Lori Brooks. Floyd Herman
was music director and Fred
Hakkers ran the power point. Reid
Button lit the candles on the altar.
Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church on the first
snowy morning. He drew
everyone’s attention to the
announcements with special
mention that the ladies have a few
beef pies. Call Joann at 519-523-
9274 if you are interested.
The call to worship was the
singing of two hymns, “All Who are
Thirsty” and “This is the Day”
followed by the prayer of approach
said responsively and the singing of
The Lord’s Prayer. We watched a
clip from the movie Evan Almighty.
The children were then asked to
come to the front for their story
time. Rev. Clark asked them if they
knew what the clip of the movie was
they had just seen. He explained to
them that God wants us to do good
things to help one another at
random. If we are kind to one
another we will be able to help
change the world. The best present
we can get is one that we didn’t
expect. The children said a prayer
along with the congregation and
went downstairs to Sunday School
and their time of fellowship. The
hymn, “Over My Head” was sung
with the men singing one part and
the women singing the other. The
scripture was Mark 15: 42-47. The
choir sang an old familiar hymn,
“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”
to a new tune.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was “Life’s Opportunities”. The
scripture tells of Joseph of
Arimathea coming to claim Jesus’
body after He died on the cross.
This was an unexpected opportunity
to be kind. If we are ready we can
seize the opportunity when it
presents itself.
The clip from the movie tells of
Evan’s wife talking to God in the
restaurant about Evan building an
arch.
God tells her that we must take
opportunities to be kind to others. If
we pray to God for patience, God
gives us the opportunity to have
patience. Opportunities do not come
when we expect them. Opportunity
to do what is right is all around us.
The next hymn, “For All The
Saints” was sung followed by the
offering being received, the
offertory response, “What Can I
Do” the offertory prayer, the prayers
for the people and the silent prayers.
The last hymn, “Forth In Your
Name” was followed by the
commissioning and the benediction
and the response.
Everyone was invited for a pizza
lunch sponsored by the Sunday
School. The free will offering is
going to help replace the toys that
have been broken in the nursery.
If I am seeking everything that can delight my senses
(William Law, “A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life”)
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that
leads to destruction--and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow
the road that leads to life--and only a few find it!” Matthew 7:13-14
If I am seeking everything that can delight my senses,and regale my appetites;
spending my time and fortune in pleasures, in diversions, and worldly enjoyments--
then how can it be said that I am working out my salvation with fear and trembling?
If there is nothing in my life and conversation that shows me to be different from the
heathen; if I use the world, and worldly enjoyments, as the generality of people now
do, and in all ages have done--then why should I think that I am among those few who
are walking in the narrow way to Heaven?
