The Citizen, 2012-11-22, Page 25Huron County Economic Development Officer Mike Pullen told Huron County Council at its Nov. 14 Committee of the Whole meeting that economic development is changing and it has now become an essential service. Pullen said that for rural areas such as Huron County, the only way to compete is to have a dynamic economic development department, which he feels Huron County can have: it just needs more resources. “Competition is fierce, but we are the masters of our own destiny,” Pullen told councillors. He said there has to be a great level of co-operation between the county and lower tiers, saying that the “silo approach” will always lose out to collaboration. Pullen said that the Huron Business Development Corporation helped to give the county a competitive advantage and that the county made the right move when it partnered with the corporation to form the Huron Economic Development Partnership in 2010. Pullen said the county is lagging behind in money being dedicated to economic development when compared to other neighbouring counties. He said that when budget deliberations come around, he’ll be recommending at least a $100,000 boost to the budget, maybe more. He said economic development has changed since the 2008 recession and that senior government funding isn’t coming to community economic development any longer. He said it’s coming in the form of straight-to-business funding. Director of Planning Scott Tousaw said he would be recommending a one-and-a-half person jump in the economic development department. He said the department should be adding another person, while picking up the half of Community Development Co-ordinator Douglas Barill’s salary that was previously being paid through RED (Rural Economic Development) funding. Tousaw said council didn’t need to approve the change immediately, just that they needed to approve the document in principle, which allowed him to continue preparing for the shift and the official decision could be made during budget deliberations. Council approved the recommendation in principle. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2012. PAGE 25.
