Continued from page 19award for 2012 was presented toAndrew Masse from WindTrans in
Seaforth. This award is presented to
a company that has turned a good
idea into a successful product in the
marketplace.
The winner of the Exporting
award was Iceculture of Hensall.
Iceculture is currently engaged in a
large project in India and recently
constructed a 30 foot tall ice castle in
Times Square, New York, for their
customer, Disney.
Ensuring that those who give back
to their communities were
recognized the HMA selection
committee saw fit to present two
awards, awards for Corporate
Citizenship went to both Vanastra
Packaging and London Road
Flooring Factory. Both are small
companies but they have made huge
differences in their communities
through their corporate
responsibility and charitable
donations.
Employer of the Year Award went
to BriteSpan Building Systems.
Accepting the award on behalf of the
company was Rob Stute. Rob is the
president of Maitland Welding,
which joined BriteSpan in a strategic
partnership to manufacture the steel
structures for their buildings.
The United Communities Credit
Union and the HMA sponsored
scholarship awards of $1,000 given
to apprentices working in Huron
County. The winners of the four
scholarship awards were Shawn
Kerslake, Dylan Barker, DillonFinkbeiner and Drew Kerslake. JimDeBlock of United Communities
Credit Union made the award
presentations.
HMA Co-ordinator Monica
Walker-Bolton, thanked all the
sponsors for the evening including
Bronze Sponsors: BM Ross,
Prosafe, Huron Small Business
Enterprise Centre, Workplace Safety
and Prevention Services, Pinder,
Taylor, McNeilly and Godkin and
Silver Sponsors: Municipality of
South Huron, Municipality of Huron
East, Town of Goderich, Township
of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
and Municipality of Morris-
Turnberry. The County of Huron
was also a major sponsor of this
event. Finally, thanks were given to
the Gold Sponsor: United
Communities Credit Union.
The evening concluded with the
much anticipated announcement of
the Huron County Manufacturer of
the Year. Huron County Warden
Bernie MacLellan presented the
Manufacturer of the Year Award to
BriteSpan Building Systems.
Although BriteSpan is a new
company, it has achieved great
things since opening its new
manufacturing facility in December
2011. The new plant is a fabric
covered, steel framed building, just
like BriteSpan sells to its own
customers. The facility includes a
combination of new equipment,
existing equipment and new special
proprietary equipment. The most
important aspect is to doublemanufacturing space and makeBriteSpan more efficient in all
aspects of manufacturing. BriteSpan
has also recently invested in two
new robots that are helping to
streamline the manufacturing
process.
The HMA recognized BriteSpan
Building Systems as a leader, due to
their commitment to developing
young people within the company.
BriteSpan has approximately 40
employees and 25 per cent of those
employees are under the age of 30.
The company invests in the
development of employees through
sending staff to training and paying
for half of the tuition for employees
to register for a course related to
their job. BriteSpan supports
apprenticeship programs and helps
provide summer employment for
youth by training them how to
weld.
The HMA also noted that
BriteSpan contributes to the local
community through support for the
local hospital foundation. BriteSpan
is the major sponsor of the
BriteSpan 4-H Dairy Invitational
event in Lucknow, which just
celebrated its 10th anniversary this
year. The awards selection
committee was particularly
impressed with BriteSpan’s
commitment to its employees. For
this reason the company was the
winner of the Employer of the Year
award. BriteSpan invests in human
resources through a minimum of
three online training seminars thatare presented to all employees.Employees are eligible to take
college or university credits, which
are subsidized by the company. The
company hosts events and staff
outings including a trip to a Blue
Jays game, a Christmas party and
occasional staff breakfasts. The
company offers a rec centre to
employees with exercise equipment
and a pool. The BriteSpan team isworking together to set goals byreading the book The Four
Disciplines of Execution by Sean
Covey. BriteSpan is looking to
expand its staff as the company
grows.

After two presentations at the Nov.
14 Committee of the Whole meeting,
Huron County Council knows that
the future of business is with
broadband internet connectivity.
Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson
led the presentations, speaking about
the intelligent community concept
and then Economic Development
Officer Mike Pullen spoke to the
councillors about where Huron
County sits now.
Pullen told councillors that with
the creative economy being such a
factor for the county going forward,
broadband connectivity is going to
be the number one factor in
attracting businesses.
Pullen told councillors that while
the county’s creative economy is
flourishing, it could still be better.
He also told them that Huron is
falling behind surrounding counties
in economic spending dollars, which
could be a big factor in attracting
businesses to the area.
Carol Leeming of the Huron
County Planning Department said
that Huron is in a good starting
position with nine different internet
providers. She said she has been told
by those outside of the county that
Huron is lucky to have so many
options.
“We are very, very well serviced
with our broadband,” she said, “but
there is room for improvement.”
Warden Bernie MacLellan said
that while he agreed with Leeming
for personal internet use, he said that
for someone to run a business, the
internet in Huron County is way
behind where it should be.
