Manufacturing Association holds annual awardsThe Huron ManufacturingAssociation (HMA) celebrated itsseventh annual Huron Manu-facturing Awards at the Central Huron Community Complex on Thursday, Nov. 15. Hosted by the Huron Manufacturing Association and gold sponsor, United Communities Credit Union, approximately 200 people were in attendance representing manufacturing, municipalities and the local businesses. Guests were welcomed by master of ceremonies Wes MacVicar of The Foundation for Enriching Education. The HMA treated its guests to a delicious barbecue turkey and pork loin dinner from Cardiff Catering of Brussels. The My United Community Hall was adorned withgorgeous red and black décor fromNJS Design and The BackyardFlower Shop. After the meal, guests received a presentation from Mike Pullen of Huron County Economic Development Services and watched a video from the Make Huron Home project. The first award of the evening was the Junior Employee of the Year Award, for an individual under 30 who has made a significant contribution to his or her manufacturing workplace. Lynda Therrien of Wescast Industries Inc. was the recipient. Carrying on with the same theme, the next award was presented to a company recognized for integration of youth into their workforce. Ben Hogervorst fromBriteSpan Building Systems, locatedin Morris-Turnberry picked up theaward on behalf of his company. The awards presentation moved along seamlessly. Videos created by videographer and movie-maker, Adam Sipione, highlighted all the nominees and award winners. Next, the Tech Department of Central Huron Secondary School was presented with the award for Outstanding Tech Department. HMA Co-ordinator, Monica Walker- Bolton stated “this award recognizes the contribution that our secondary schools make towards training the next generation of workers and entrepreneurs”. Joe VanBakel accepted the award on behalf of CHSS. The Green Leader Award ispresented to a company whoseproducts and/or practices are helping to reduce our ecological footprint. This year’s winner was Actium Resources from Goderich. Actium Resources invented an on-site composting drum, which is ideal for turning food waste or even dead stock into useful soil. Composting is a great environmentally-friendly alternative to other waste disposal methods such as incineration or landfill. The Outstanding Associate Member Award is presented to an associate member of the Huron Manufacturing Association that has made an outstanding contribution to the community and to advancing thegoals of the HMA. The Award waspresented to the Four County LabourMarket Planning Board. The HMA recognized the planning board for the work that they do to research the local labour market and promote workforce development. Executive- Director, Gemma Mendez-Smith accepted the award on behalf of her organization. The Innovative Manufacturing Award is presented to companies who invest in process improvement, productivity enhancements or expanded manufacturing capacity.
