The Citizen, 2012-11-22, Page 18PAGE 18. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2012.South Huron severances irk Van DiepenbeekTwo proposed farm house sever-ances in South Huron ruffled thefeathers of several members ofHuron County Council who feltcouncil was far too ready to severproperties. At the Nov. 14 Committee of
the Whole meeting Warden
Bernie MacLellan said he supported
the severances of the Prance
family, but that the regulations at
the lower tier (South Huron in
this case) should be changed
rather than Huron County Council
having to grant exceptions every
month.
“I have sat here for a lot of years,”
said Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt.“We need to get it straight at thelower tier. We need to simplify this.”Ashfield-Colborne-WawanoshReeve Ben Van Diepenbeek, howev-er, felt council was getting out ofcontrol with the severances it wasgranting.“It seems like we’ll just sever any-
thing. We’ll just let it happen,” Van
Diepenbeek said. “We have no
regard for what farming is all about
anymore.”
Van Diepenbeek said that if coun-
cil continued to sever houses, they
would make it impossible for a
young farmer to start up a new oper-
ation, leaving just severed houses
and large tracts of land.
“There are no opportunities left foryoung farmers,” Van Diepenbeeksaid. “We’ll just sever everything and move on, because we are sever-ing everything and I don’t agree withit.”Despite Van Diepenbeek’s opposi-tion, the motion was carried bycouncil.Continued from page 17Ontario.
