The Wingham Ironmen split a pair
of Western Junior C Hockey League
contests over the weekend.
After suffering a 7-2 setback at the
hands of the league-leading
Walkerton Hawks on Friday evening
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, the Ironmen
played a complete 60 minutes on
Saturday and scored a 2-1 decision
over the second-place Kincardine
Bulldogs.
Derek Elliott and Drew Gross did
the scoring for the Ironmen on
Saturday at the complex. Brett
Brophy assisted on both markers.
Earning single assists were Joey
Terwoord and Aaron Armstrong.
Keegan Woodman made his debut
in the Wingham net and turned aside
24 of 25 shots faced to record the
victory.
Wingham outshot Kincardine 32-
25 and the Ironmen were 1-5 on the
power play.
Coach Russ Sutton said it was a
very big win for the Ironmen.
“We came and finally played a full
60 minutes of hockey,” he said. “The
boys earned it, they worked hard for
it and deserved the two points they
got for it.”
The coach said the team was
consistent right from the opening
face-off to the end of the game.
“We were consistent right from
the front to the back end,” he said.
“No one got rattled. Once again we
didn’t take a lot of penalties which
helped.”
“I thought the guys played their
guts out tonight.”
The coach was impressed by the
team’s defensive zone coverage.
“They’re starting to get it. They’re
starting to pick guys up and they
didn’t do bad last night (against
Walkerton) until late in the game,
but tonight they did it all the way
through,” said Sutton.
Netminder Woodman said they
played a solid 60 minutes.
“The defence helped me out,
keeping the shots to the outside, and
the defence really made it easy on
me, I don’t think I had more than a
handful of shots,” he said.
Woodman said the defence really
kept the shot count down and made
it easy for the netminder to make the
first save.
Against Walkerton on Friday
evening the Ironmen played good
hockey for 40 minutes, but then ran
out of gas in the third period as the
Hawks tallied five unanswered goals
to record the 7-2 victory.
Armstrong and Elliott each had a
goal and an assist for the Ironmen.
Receiving single helpers were
Terwoord and Gross.
Haden Campbell and Wade
Pfeffer scored two goals apiece for
Walkerton.
The Ironmen outshot the Hawks
33-26, including an 18-3 second
period margin and were 2-9 on the
power play.
Coach Sutton said it was a good
game until the third period.
“The guys played hard. We forgot
about defence in the third period,”
he said. “They got a couple of
shorthanded goals on back-to-back
shifts and it kind of sunk us there.”
“All in all it was a good game, but
we have to play 60 minutes,” said
Sutton.
He said they were moving the
puck around the perimeter on the
power play, which is what the others
want you to do, but the Ironmen
were just not getting the puck
through.
“Anytime we got a shot through
they either blocked it or got a stick
on it,” he said. “They were able to
keep the puck out of their zone and
we had to go back to our zone and
start over again.”
Player Justin Jacklin said they ran
out of gas in the third period.
“We just couldn’t buy anything in
the third,” he said. “(We) hit the
post. Drew Gross hit the post on a
nice play from Aaron (Armstrong)
and we battled hard in the second
period and I guess we put all our
energy into the second period.”
He said having two shorthanded
goals and a power play goal scored
against them should never happen.
He suggested they juggle some
things up and see what works.
Because of the Regional Midget
Silver Stick tournament the Ironmen
are on the road for a pair of games
this weekend. On Friday they travel
to Hanover for an 8 p.m. game
against the Barons and then on
Saturday they travel to Kincardine
for a 7 p.m. game against the
Bulldogs.

Lightning split home and away
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning split a home and home
series with the London Devilettes
this past weekend with each team
shutting out the other on home ice.
Saturday saw the Lightning gain
back some of their scoring touch,
blanking the visiting Devilettes 3-0.
Miranda Lantz opened the scoring
with a wrist shot from the slot after
a feed up the centre of the ice from
defenceman Maddie Duncan. Kelly
Gribbons then tipped home a shot
from Dawn Pletsch following a
beautiful three-way passing play
that included linemate Cassidy
Colhoun. Gribbons got her second
of the game, blasting a slapshot from
just inside the blue line. Duncan and
Pletsch both earned their second
points of the game, assisting on the
play. Shea Tiley was solid in net,
earning the shutout.
Sunday it was a different story
when the Bolts travelled to London
for a return engagement. The
Lightning had trouble finding the
back of the net, despite outplaying
and outshooting the Devilettes,
dropping the game 2-0. Next
weekend the Lightning host the
Brantford Ice-Cats Saturday at 2
p.m. in Teeswater.
