Municipality of Huron East FINAL TAXES Property owners are reminded that the due date for the final installment of property taxes is November 30, 2012. P. Michiels Treasurer-Finance Manager McGavin surprised by family turnout at medal event What a wonderful few days we enjoyed over the weekend and the first of the week. Many folks were out and about getting their outdoor work done. There are some folks who have been busy putting up their Christmas decorations outside in the great weather. I thought a final cleaning of the windows was a good job to get accomplished and then maybe Christmas decorations to follow. Christmas is only five weeks away! We are pleased to report that Gord Pryce is home from hospital and is doing well. He is tired and needs to rest, so visitors are welcome, but short stays are advised. George Adams is a patient in a London Hospital and we hope he is steadily improving. Our get-well wishes got to Leona Armstrong who suffered a fall and has injured her elbow quite badly. They believe a break has occurred and she will have to wait and see what they will do. But she reports it is very painful. Our get-well wishes go to Viola Traviss who is a patient at this time in Seaforth Hospital and to Margery Huether who is now in London Hospital for a stay. Our condolences to the Stephenson family on the passing of Marie Stephenson. Our sympathies are extended to Donna, Jim, Jean and Les and their families. Marie was a lovely lady whom I met many years ago and always enjoyed our visits. Home for a visit with Barry and Karen Hoegy is daughter Sherry Delay and her dog, Dawson. Sherrylives in Morristown, Tennessee andwas here for a week visiting. Our birthday congratulations go toPat Gillis on reaching the milestone of 60! The family gathered in Stratford, along with many of her friends, to enjoy a lovely dinner and social evening. There were about 30 guests for the evening including her two sons, Craig and Mark, and their families. Congrats to Pat! Our congratulations to many local men who were honoured last week. They were presented with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal by our Federal MP Ben Lobb for Huron Bruce. The ceremony was held at the Wingham Knights of Columbus Centre last Wednesday night. There were 30 medals presented including local recipients Neil McGavin, Walton; Joe Seili, Brussels; Bob Fisher, Seaforth and Art Bolton Winthrop. Congratulations to everyone. Neil McGavin was surprised to have most of his family attend the presentation of his Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal last week. Brian, Jeff, Cathy and members of their families attended. Unfortunately, daughter Heather of North Bay, who had planned on attending, came down with the flu and had to miss the event. Neil’s sister, Liz Dinsmore, came from Brampton to attend. This is very special for Neil as he also received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, ten years ago. Way to go Neil and congrats from all your Walton friends. The McGavins had a nice visit with Liz Dinsmore while she was here for a couple of days. They did a McKillop tour and reminisced about the many changes in the countryside and homes. It was very exciting for the children of Chris and Lisa Stevenson on the weekend because they were able to sleep in their new house! The Stevensons are moving into their new home on Moncrieff Road and will be fully moved in and hopefullysettled by this weekend.Rick, Jo-Ann, LeeAnn and Aliciatravelled to Ayr to attend a babyshower for daughter Kelly and Adam. Adam’s sisters hosted the shower and it was held at the Ayr Curling Club. There were plenty of snacks, entertaining games and a wonderful dinner provided and served by the “aunts” to be. The area farmers were discussing putting away their farm equipment for the winter. The helpful hint they were imparting was to make sure to put dryer sheets, Fleecy or Bounce, in the cabs of tractors, combines, trucks or anywhere mice would like to chew things. It seems that mice and they thought rats also, do not like the smell of the fabric softener sheets. It doesn’t hurt to give it a try and you can see for yourself next spring if it works. (It also works in motor homes and cars in storage they say.) Celebrating birthdays this past week include Lynne Godkin, Charlie Glauser, Kristi Dawn Godkin, Spencer Steinman, Charles Storey, Mark Sullivan, Derek Hoegy,Shirley Ann Boven, FionaMcDonald, Sarah Williamson, Carl McCallum, Valerie Shortreed, andIan Wilbee. Happy birthday to all. (Vicky Bremner photo) Duff’s UCW ladies meeting set The UCW ladies of Duff’s United Church had a wrap-up meeting of the turkey supper and the budget meeting for the upcoming year. Reports from all about the supper were all positive and Glenda reports financially almost all monies have been turned in and the bills paid. The budget was set for next year with only a few changes made. The groups for the social committee were discussed about whether to go from three groups to two groups. It was decided to leave the groups at three and to alternate groups with functions. The group has taken two Blyth theatre dinners for next year and they are June 14 and Aug. 31. The Christmas meeting is traditionally a Christmas meal and a caterer has been booked. The date is Dec. 5 and to confirm your attendance, contact and payment can be made with Patty Banks, Judy Lee or Jo-Ann McDonald. The cost is $15 a person and everyone is invited to bring a guest. The traditional White Gift Service is Dec. 9 and the Huron County Christmas Bureau appreciates all donations to make the less fortunate a nice Christmas. Please bring your gifts and gifts of money to the December service. The Christmas Eve service will be held in Walton but Rev. Peter will be in Bluevale. Judy Lee reported that a new Seaforth Food Bank representative from the UCW should be in place for March. If anyone is interested in the position, they can contact Judy about what the position entails. The Food Bank is also looking for more volunteers to help on Tuesday mornings or Thursday afternoons. Contact Judy if you could be a volunteer and she will pass on your name to the board director.
