A cup that all must drink
(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Matthew” 1856)
“He fell with His face to the ground and prayed” Matthew 26:39
Prayer is the best practical remedy that we can use in time of trouble. We see that
Christ Himself prayed, when His soul was sorrowful. All true Christians ought to do
the same.
Trouble is a cup that all must drink in this world of sin.We are “born to trouble
as the sparks fly upward.”We cannot avoid it. Of all creatures, none is so vulnerable
as man. Our bodies, our minds, our families, our business, our friends-- are all so many
doors through which afflictions will come in. The holiest saints can claim no
exemption from it. Like their Master, they are often “men of sorrow.”
But what is the first thing to be done in time of trouble? We must pray. Like Job, we
must fall down and worship. Like Hezekiah, we must spread our matters before the
Lord.
The first one we must turn to for help, must be our God. We must tell all our sorrow
to our Father in Heaven. We must believe confidently that nothing is too trivial or
minute to be laid before Him, so long as we do it with entire submission to His will.
It is the mark of faith to keep nothing back from our best Friend. The thorn in the flesh
shall either be removed--or grace to endure it will be given to us.

Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Nov. 18
were Brenda Brooks and Donna
Moore. Ushering were Cliff Snell,
Terry Richmond, Brenda Brooks
and Donna Moore. Floyd Herman
was music director. Rev. Sharon
Lohnes from Dungannon Church
was guest speaker.
The announcements were given
from the November bulletin with
special mention that the Sunday
school will be hosting a lunch on
Sunday, Nov. 25 with proceeds for
the purchase of new toys to replace
some that have broken.
The call to worship was the
singing of two hymns, “All Who Are
Thirsty” and “This is the Day”
followed by the prayer of approach
and the singing of The Lord’s
Prayer. The first hymn was, “This is
God’s Wondrous World.”
The children were asked to come
to the front and Rev. Lohnes asked
them what was a good thing that
happened to them this past week.
Many answers came forth. Winning
a hockey game, a new brother and so
forth. She told the children that
sometimes we don’t like to do the
things that lead up to the good things
that happen to us, like all the
practice we have to do to play
hockey. We need to get through the
bad things in order to get to the good
things.
She said a prayer and the children
went down to Sunday school for
their time of fellowship. The
scripture was from Matthew 13: 24-
30. The choir sang an old familiar
hymn, “How Great Thou Art”. Rev.
Lohnes’ message to the
congregation was “Be the Miracle.”
Rev. Lohnes gave a little bit of her
background that she grew up in
Fordwich area and she is a movie
buff so this message was right down
her alley. The movie that she
referred to was Bruce Almighty.
The theme of the movie was that
Bruce was not getting the things he
prayed for. After complaining that
God was not doing His job, Bruce
was given the opportunity to answer
the prayers of others. He decided
that if he answered yes to all the
prayers, this would be a good thing
but he soon learned that this was not
possible. This caused a lot of anger.
We viewed a clip of the movie.
Bruce finds out that it doesn’t matter
how bad things get they will get
better by listening to others and that
miracles will happen. God tells us to
be the miracle. In the scriptures it
