Hullett Central to participate in Remembrance Day We will remember them The Blyth Legion held its annual Remembrance Day church service on Sunday at Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church in Auburn. Members of the Legion marked the occasion by marching the colours into the church and presenting them before the ceremony began. The official Blyth Remembrance Day ceremony will be held on Sunday beginning at 10:45 a.m. at Memorial Hall. (Vicky Bremner photo) With Remembrance Day fast approaching, there are some concerns from residents of Blyth as to what form the Remembrance Day service will take in the coming years. Blyth Legion Branch President Andy Lubbers said that this year a wreath will be placed only by students of Hullett Central Public School and not by Maitland River Public School in Wingham. “The Wingham Legion will be taking care of that school,” he said. Since Remembrance Day will be held on a weekend, Lubbers said that attendance to their service will be open to all. The event is held at Blyth Memorial Hall, a living monument. “If it were on a week day, we would be doing whatever the public schools were doing,” Lubbers said, adding that celebrations of Remembrance will be held at local schools on the Friday prior to the event. “We know that numbers will be down at the hall, but we’re hoping that students from Hullett and from the north will come,” he said. The Legion was in talks with Maitland River principal Alice McDowell, however nothing came of the discussion in time for this weekend’s event. The Blyth Legion will be represented at Hullett at 9 a.m. on Friday, and will then continue south to Central Huron Secondary School and St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School to be involved in the celebrations there. However, if Remembrance Day fell on aweekday, Lubbers said things wouldbe different. “Our own ceremony on Remembrance Day wouldn’t work for the schedule we’re having on Friday,” he said. “We do our own service at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day.” On Nov. 11, the ceremony will be held at 10:45 a.m. and start with the laying of the wreaths, followed by services after. “With the school not being here, we will of course miss those students being involved,” Lubbers said. “We haven’t heard anything from the schools on the matter, but that could be because it’s on a Sunday. Next year, that may change, but we encourage students to come one way or another.” Blyth Business Improvement Association President Rick Elliott said that this is a major concern for the area. “We need to get a commitment from the Avon Maitland District School Board,” he said. “We were told by Alice McDowell, through [North Huron Chief Administrative Officer Gary Long] that provincial requirements state there must be a Remembrance Day Service for children. She said they are doing it in the school on Friday.” He said that, going forward, the school board needs to work to have the children of Blyth present at the community Remembrance Day service held annually at Blyth Memorial Hall. “The Memorial Hall is a living memorial that was built for World War I vets,” he said. “It’s the most visited war memorial in at least BIG NEWS from TCC Tuckersmith Communications opens NEW retail store in Seaforth!
