Sutton blames poor defensive coverage for losses
A lack of defensive zone coverage
is leading to the defeat of the
Wingham Ironmen in the Western
Junior C Hockey League.
The Ironmen were handed another
pair of setbacks in league play on the
weekend. Playing at the North
Huron Wescast Community
Complex on Friday evening, the
Ironmen were defeated by the five-
time defending league champion
Walkerton Hawks 6-1 and on
Saturday, at the Mitchell and District
Community Centre, the Ironmen
were edged 4-3 by the Mitchell
Hawks.
The Ironmen fell behind 3-1 after
the opening 20 minutes of play and
were unable to add any more to their
total, while the Hawks scored two
more in the second period and added
a single marker in the final 20
minutes.
Evan Ducharme was the lone goal
getter for the Ironmen, with assists
going to Darren Kerr and Nic Carter.
Drew Davidson had a pair of goals
for Walkerton.
Coach Russ Sutton said the
Ironmen were unable to handle the
Walkerton forwards in the Wingham
zone.
“That’s what it basically comes
down to,” he said. “That’s why
we’ve been losing: defensive
coverage.”
The Ironmen had excellent
chances in the third period, but were
unable to capitalize on their
opportunities. “We finally got pissed
off and started playing hockey,” said
Sutton. “Defence. It’s not the
defencemen, it’s defensive zone
coverage.”
Captain Aaron Armstrong said the
Ironmen came out a bit flat. He said
there were a couple of things the
team needs to work on, but the team
battled hard.
“We’re going to go through these
tough games. We just got to stick
together and we’ll pull through,” he
said.
Armstrong said he is adjusting to
being a marked man when he’s on
the ice. “It’s all right out there. I have
a good group of guys helping me out
here, so it’s nice to know they got me
out there,” he said.
In the game at Mitchell, the two
teams were deadlocked at one after
the first period. Mitchell scored three
second period goals and Wingham
responded with two goals in the third
period to get to within one, but were
unable to net the equalizer.
Armstrong scored both third
period goals for the Ironmen.
Dylan Williams assisted on both
of them with Matt Baker helping
out on one.
Carter scored in the first period,
with Matt McCracken earning the
assist. Mitchell outshot the Ironmen
40-39 and Wingham was 0-7 on the
powerplay.
The Ironmen host the Hanover
Barons on Friday, beginning at
7:30 p.m. at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex. On
Saturday, the Ironmen travel to
Mount Forest for an 8 p.m. contest
against the Patriots.By Jim Brown

Lightning edged out of Detroit tourney
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning travelled to Detroit over
the weekend to compete in the Bauer
Invitational Tournament. Despite
only allowing four goals in four
games, the Lightning
failed to make it on to the playoff
round.
The Bolts opened the tournament
with a 2-2 draw with the Etobicoke
Dolphins. Defencemen Sarah
Biesenthal and Maddie Duncan got
the two Lightning goals with Kelly
Gribbons earning assists on both
goals. In the second game of the
round robin, the Lightning faced the
Milwaukee Jr. Admirals, downing
them 2-0. Jordyn Sholdice scored
the first goal with assists going to
Duncan and Gribbons. Dawn
Pletsch then scored an unassisted
marker, rounding out the scoring.
Morgan Baker stopped all
Milwaukee shots to earn the shutout
in net.
On Saturday morning, the
Lightning played their best game of
the tournament against the top
ranked Midget team in the U.S., the
Chicago Young Americans.
Gribbons opened the scoring with
assists going to linemates Pletsch
and Cassidy Colhoun. Colhoun then
scored one of her own with a helper
from Miranda Lantz. Shea Tiley
was solid in net, making many key
saves to shut out the Young
Americans.
The Lightning then faced a
showdown with the undefeated
Kitchener Lady Rangers in the final
game of the round-robin with the
winner going on to the tournament
playoff round. The Bolts fell behind
2-0 to the Lady Rangers and could
not recover. Kelly Gribbons scored
on a great individual effort, but it
was too little, too late as the game
ended 2-1 for Kitchener.
Next weekend the Lightning host
the Bluewater Hawks on sponsor
appreciation day in Howick.

Zurich squad 3-2
The Blyth Brussels Novice AE
team hosted Zurich for an afternoon
game on Sunday, Nov. 4. Zurich got
on the scoreboard early on in the
first period but that didn’t
discourage Blyth Brussels who won
the game 3-2.
Going into the second period
the team let one more goal past
the pads of the goalie, but soon
after that Brett McCutcheon got
the team on the scoreboard
unassisted.
With Blyth Brussels down by one
Dawson Dunbar found a hole and
shot the puck through the goalie to
tie the game.
By now the fans were on the edge
of their seats cheering on their team.
Kaeden Huether received a pass
from Marley Fleet and Kal
McNichol who slammed the puck in
the net to take the lead.
Connor Hallahan, Bradley
Hummel, Colby Nicholson and
Liam Shortreed played great defense
and kept the puck over the blue line.
Griffin Marshall, Joel Nesbit and
Kaleb Roth were busy keeping the
puck up the ice for the final buzzer
to end the game.
Lucas Jacklin kept a low scoring
game by saving numerous pucks
from going in.
Great teamwork and coaching
skills paid off.
