It was quite a week last week with
the effects of Hurricane Sandy
touching our area. Huron County
residents can consider themselves
lucky that the loss of hydro for many
was only for a short time and that
our area did not receive that much
rain to cause flooding. A couple of
farmers report that they only had just
over an inch of rain in the four days
of rain. The wind was the worst
problem with broken tree branches
and whole trees being toppled. In
Brussels, the homes of Harvey and
Betty Shaw and Jeff Heibein and
Dawn Currie were very lucky with
toppled trees missing their
respective homes. The Shaw home
received a few scrapes of the siding
and the Heibein lot had the tree
topple in the open part of the lot.
Don and Pat Dalton had a tree in
their backyard break off some very
large portions, but the centre of the
tree remains. The roads were littered
with tree branches and the road
crews from Huron East were kept
busy cleaning up the mess. Good job
men.
The wet weather put a hold on the
corn harvest for the farmers, but
gave Parrish and Heimbecker time to
clear up the humongous pile of corn
that had grown in their yard.
Babies are a popular topic this past
week. Our congratulations go to
Mike and Nicole Noble on the birth
of their first son, Beckett John. First-
time grandparents are Murray and
Ruth Lowe and proud uncle and
half-name sake is Uncle John Lowe.
You can tell Murray is excited about
being a grandpa – he is smiling as he
grumbles.
Congratulations to Laura
(Warwick) and Chris Hackett on the
birth of a baby girl. Sloane Madelyn
has arrived to enrich their lives.
Proud grandparents are Neil and
Dianne Warwick and Linda
Warwick.
Congratulations to Josh and
Stephanie Horst who have
welcomed a baby girl to their family.
A beautiful baby girl, Dani, is their
first child. Happy grandparents are
Richard and Marjorie Horst and the
Gillers of Seaforth.
Congratulations to Brandi Leslie
and Johnny Upshall on the arrival of
a baby boy, Jax. He is welcomed
home by big sisters Tyler and
Brooke. Happy and excited
grandparents are Patty Banks and
Jim Cook.
Congratulations to Sharon
Robbins on being a first-time
grandmother. Her oldest son, Dennisand Crystal of London, welcomed ason, Jaxon to their lives on
Halloween night. Jaxon is a third
great-grandchild for Lloyd and
Mabel Glanville.
Returning from a wonderful trip to
the East coast are Jim and Lois Lee.
They were away six days and rented
a car upon arrival. They flew into
Halifax and then drove to Antigonish
and stayed at a wonderful bed and
breakfast. They met up with Archie
McDonald and spent three days
exploring the area around
Englishtown, where Archie lives.
They went on the Cabot Trail and
visited the musical sites of the
MacIsaac, Rankins and Rita McNeil.
They loved Cape Breton and the
beauty of the area. They returned to
Halifax and enjoyed a wonderful
blues club. They report a great time
away.
The Walton Hall was beautifully
decorated for the presentation for
Nadine Ringgenberg and her
husband Alex. The young couple
was wed in Switzerland in the spring
and are home visiting their
respective parents. Alex is from
Quebec and the couple had a
presentation in his hometown earlier.
Nadine’s parents are Albrecht and
Annaleis Ringgenberg of Walton.
The invited guests enjoyed the
beautiful photos and wonderful food
provide by the family. The young
couple live in Switzerland and
Nadine is in school. Congrats to the
happy couple.
Welcome back to Abby McGavin
who has returned from a quick trip
to Olds, Alberta. She was out
visiting brother Brandon. They
kept busy visiting the West
Edmonton Mall, Banff and Lake
Louise.
Our get-well wishes go to Shirley
Clark who is a patient in London

‘Sandy’ downs trees in Walton, Brussels
Honoured
Heather Pham, wife of late OPP officer Vu Pham, was honured, along with members of several
families, at a ceremony in Goderich on Nov. 1 where three Hwy. 21 bridges were dedicated in
the names of three fallen Huron County OPP officers: Pham, Dave Mounsey and Bruce Crew.
While the full size bridge signs were on display at Goderich’s Knights of Columbus hall, a
framed replica was presented to the families of the deceased officers. Presenting Heather with
her framed replica is OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. Pham was killed in a 2010 shootout on
County Road 12 between Walton and Seaforth. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
