THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2012.Sports Ironmen drop weekend games to Kincardine, Mitchell The Wingham Ironmen suffered a pair of setbacks in Western Junior C Hockey League play on the weekend. Both games were played at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. The Ironmen held period leads of 4-0 and 5-3 on Friday evening against the Kincardine Bulldogs, but ended up losing the contest 8-7. On Sunday afternoon, the Ironmen were doubled up by the Mitchell Hawks 6-3. The Bulldogs scored five straight goals in the third period on Friday before the Ironmen attempted a rally, but fell one goal short as the Ironmen had to settle for the 8-7 defeat. Aaron Armstrong picked up five assists. Travis Donaldson and Derek Elliott each scored two goals for Wingham. Single markers were added by Darren Kerr, Drew Gross and Andrew Scott. Elliott also added an assist. Justin Jacklin and Evan Ducharme collected two assists apiece. Single helpers were recorded by Joey Terwoord. Joel Alton scored twice for the Bulldogs. Each team had 31 shots on net and the Ironmen were 0-3 on the power play. Coach Russ Sutton said it wasn’t a bad game. “We started out the way we wanted to, but we didn’t escalate with our play throughout the full 60 minutes,” he said. “We just kind of stayed the same and Kincardine kept chipping away, and they got a win out of it.” He indicated the Bulldogs are a tough, offensively strong team that never quit in the game. “They kept coming and coming and in the end they prevailed because of it,” said Sutton. Brayden Pellett said the Ironmen had a good start but they did not finish well. The first-year forward said it was little breakdowns and little mistakes the team made that enabled the Bulldogs to overcome the 4-0 deficit. “There was not much they could do about it. We didn’t get the bounces after the first period,” he said. “We got to come back harder for the next game.” The Ironmen traded goals with the Mitchell Hawks in the first period of Sunday’s contest, before the Hawks took a 5-3 lead after 40 minutes of play. Elliott scored all three goals for Wingham. Armstrong picked up two assists, with single helpers being received by Donaldson, Brett Brophy and Terwoord. Scoring for Mitchell were Scott Fries, Ryan Goetz, Jeremy Ennet, Brent Rae and Ryan Syles. Coach Sutton said the team was lacking in defensive zone coverage and that was the cause of the two weekend setbacks. “Or maybe the boys might have missed curfew last night,” he said. The coach said secondary scoring is okay, saying they weren’t too bad in that category, but noted they could use help. “Today was just an all-around bad game,” he said. “We couldn’t do anything right. We couldn’t get the puck to the net, we couldn’t get the puck out of our zone.” Forward Elliott said they started out pretty well, but then the wheels fell off again. “We just need to keep working and we’ll be on top of the league soon enough” said Elliott. He said that Aaron Armstrong is awesome to play with. “He sees the ice well, a great passer, he has wonderful hands and you put your stick down on the ice and he’ll find it, that’s how I get goals,” he said. The Ironmen have two games this weekend. After playing host to the Walkerton Hawks on Friday at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex, beginning at 7:30 p.m., the Ironmen travel to Mitchell on Saturday for a 7:15 p.m. contest against the Hawks. In this much-awaited for first home game, the girls didn’t disappoint. In the first period the Lightning came out flying, controlling the puck and pounding the goalie with shoots. Although the girls outplayed and outshot the Chiefs the score remained 0-0 going into the second. As the second period rolled on, the Chiefs took it to the net and scored first. This wasn’t going to stop the Lightning, as they answered back with an unassisted goal by Janelle Smeltzer. Hard work from Madison Beishuizen paid off as she put the puck to the back of the net, assisted by Smeltzer and Jamey Cunningham. In the third period the girls kept the pressure on and pocketed two more goals. These two goals came from Smeltzer and Jaymee Nolan with assists going to Emma Swift, Kelsey Mighton and Megan Wilton. The final score was 4-1. Great game going out to Beishuizen, Leah Herrfort and all the Lightning. On Sunday the girls travelled to Waterloo to play the Ravens. Trying to keep the momentum rolling the girls came out playing hard, but went down by one goal as the first ended. With the second period underway, the girls tied up the game with a goal by Smeltzer with the assist going to Mighton. As the time ticked down, the Ravens answered back with another goal and took the lead 2-1.
